throttle spring help

dont really know how to askthis so...'

right now my throttle spring (spring that allows the carb butterfly valve to close backup after pushing the accelorator pedal) has no mount. the spring is strecthed forward and hangin on a hole on the engine block. what is the spring supose to be attacthed to? i can get pics if you still dont know what i mean

I bought the double return spring from Summit. it included the mount.

Word of warning:
Use a spring, but don't make it too tight.
This has a direct affect on how long your carb lasts.
Too much spring pressure will wear out your throttle plate.

That's why I never liked looking at a stretched spring, made to fit where it's not supposed to.
A proper mount is the key.
I suppose you could fab a bracket to the carb mounting bolt.

you can kinda see what i did on my old motor. just a bent piece of metal with a hole drilled in it

You should have the spring mounted on towards the front of the motor, not the rear. This will help to prolong the life of your carb.

how does that work? it would just pull the plates open?

You have to change the hole the spring mounts into otherwise you are right, it would pull the carb open lol.

i've always run rear-mounted return springs.

should i attempt differently for my new motor? carbing a '91 mustang 5.0 with a holley 4160

how does it extend the carbs life?

It keeps the bushings from wearing out as fast.

Arnt you suppose to have a return spring on both sides to prevent a stuck throttle either way? I'm fairly sure NHRA require 2 return springs.

The double spring is a spring inside a spring. It should also be mounted to pull in the direction of the cable or rod to close the blades, NOT forward. A double spring is mandated on some classes...not all. Keep from over stretching the springs as this will prematurely wear out the bushing in the carb body.

two springs, one in case the other breaks.
You don't need a stuck wide open throttle!

Check the NPD catalog for part # 9741 (throttle return spring bracket). Most of them are designed to mount under the driver's rear carb stud nut.
