throw-out bearing?

I have a 2005 mustang GT. It's a manual and I think the throw-out bearing is done for. There is a squeeling when I'm out of gear with my foot off the clutch. If I push in the clutch just a tad the sound changes or goes away for a few seconds. Its got way louder during the last day. Now its added a new noise when I shift and makes the squeeling all the time. Anyone have a guesstimate how long it can last like this? Any possible catastrofic damage to the tranny possible if it fails while driving? Any insight would be great. Thanks in advance for the help.

We actually don't have a TOB, we have a concentric slave cylinder. Depending on your miles and wear/tear, it certainly could be going out and causing the issue. I would get it looked at soon. Tranny labor on these cars isn't too expensive. I just got quoted just over $200 to have a clutch and slave cylinder installed (well, they're running a 25% off labor special).

While you're having that done, you might want to consider upgrading the clutch, too.

Well, I have 53000 miles. No throw out bearing, huh? I dont know this car as well as I would like. It's a whole other world from my 5.0. Would it be worth it to also change out the flywheel to an aluminum one? I'm not rich but if they are already taking everything apart?

Since the clutch is hydraulic it has a master cylinder (attached to the clutch pedal) and a slave cylinder (inside the tranny where the TOB normally is). The slave cylinder connects to the pressure plate and disengages the clutch when you press the peddle. I believe there is a bearing inside of the slave cylinder which does the job that the old TOB did, so that may be going bad.

Awesome. thanks for the explaination Dan. I am quite sure what I am hearing is a bearing squeal. Sounds exactly like a worn out TOB. Either way I am going to have it checked out. On my last mustang I changed out the tranny on the floor in the garage and I will never do any tranny work on the floor again. Totally sucked...

If the bearing in the slave cyl is bad then it will make the same noise.. It's not that these cars don't have a TOB it's just that it is integrated into the slave cyl

For streetability, I would say no. Stay with the stock one. Just get it resurfaced if you do change the clutch.

Ok, true, but you can't go to Ford and ask for a TOB For a S197. They'll look at you like

Well, it was the bearing in the slave cylinder. Going to have them change out the clutch while they are at it. I "accidentally" told them to change out the rear end gears for 4.10s. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it..

haha yeah i had to replace one too not to bad actually but have to drop the trans to even check it. mine was was leaking fluid and its tied into/uses the brake fluid so not cool.

thats because On the parts computer it does not come up as a TOB it's a slave cylinder. A parts guy might not understand that but a tech will

A slave cylinder has a TOB built into it to ride against the pressure plate..
