I romped on it tonight against a buddy in his notch and afterward I hear a ticking sound coming from the engine. I still have stock injectors with all those mods listed below. If I blew a hole in a piston would it tick? could it be a bent pushrod, stuck lifter, or a rocker arm problem? I rolled in at about 2:00 in the morning so I couldn't let it idle to diagnose it tonight, but first thing tomorrow I will try listening to the valve cover. I'm bummin - this is my DD.


BTW, he had a good pull on me I couldn't close.
 
By the way to answer your question. I dont think you'll get a tick from a hole in a piston plus it would burn oil through the hole. It sounds like a valve train problem to me. Maybe a loose rocker, colapsed lifter. Did you miss a gear and over rev it or put it in a lower gear than you were supposed to? Like a 2nd to 3rd shift became a 2nd to 1st shift? Or a 3rd to 4th shift became a 3rd to 2nd shift? Just trying to draw a picture here.
 
Its prolly just a header gasket. The stupid bolts loosen up and after a hard romp it burns the gasket and it ticks. Sounds just like rocker tick but I bet you blew a header gasket.
 
Yes, I do have an FMU, and I know I should have bigger injectors. It sounds more like a metal tick than a header gasket, but I hope it's just a gasket. That's true about the burning oil, didn't think of that. Today I'm going to pull the valve covers and see what's up. Just looking for some advice or past experiences. Thanks
 
Before you pull it apart, Use a long screwdriver put you ear to the handle end and use it like a stethascope. Put the metal end to differnt areas and listen for the niose. I still think its only a header gasket. Try tightening all your header bolts before you take it apart.
 
Injector HP ratings: divide flow rating by.5 and multiply the result by the number of injectors. This uses a 100% duty cycle. These ratings are for naturally aspirated engines.

Example:
19/.5 = 38, 38 x 8 = 304 HP
24/.5 = 48, 48 x 8 = 384 HP
30/.5 = 60, 60 x 8 = 480 HP

The preferred duty cycle is about 85% maximum, so for a safety factor mulitply the final figure times .85.

304 HP x .85 = 258 HP
385 HP x .85 = 326 HP
480 HP x .85 = 408 HP

Remember that the above ratings are at 39 PSI. Increasing the pressure will effectively increase the flow rating. Example: a 19 lb injector will flow 24 lbs at 63 PSI, and a 24 lb injector will flow 30 lbs at 63 PSI.

A 19 lb injector at 90 PSI only passes 28.86 lbs. You can get to a point to where the pressure is so high that things start leaking & breaking very easily. It is time for new injectors.
