The thing about doing it yourself... its good to have someone there especially the first couple times you tear into an engine. When its your DD, then it gets scary. This forum is great but in reality if its yoru DD, you don't have 3 hours to wait for a response when you're already covered in crap and need to get the car on the road.

Do you have friends that have done it before? Even your dads friends brothers cousin type stuff? Some of the best help you'll ever get will show up for beer and pizza if you ask nicely.

I agree with Adam.... I personally can attest to your hesitation as well. That $1,100 bucks can go a long ways towards a beater car. That's the direction I would go. Get you a cheap beater car, THEN try the swap yourself. You may even find your insurance going DOWN as you can put your mustang on w/e duty and your beater on permanent driving. Then you have weeks, even months to work on the mustang.

Something to think about.

If you don't have another car-this is a scary undertaking. If it is your first time-it is even worse.
I'd have to recommend against doing this yourself-you'll be going to the hardware store and auto parts stores before you even get it torn down. I don't think you need that kind of stress.
I'd buy a beater-something you can drive, the uglier the better. A couple hundred bux will turn into a lifesaver here. Then you can tear down and take your time-really learn what you are doing.

i think an hci can be accomplished in a weekend. starting on it friday afternoon. the idea of a beater car is fantastic if you have the extra money. i learned to build my first engine in highschool with a friend of mine and it was my only car, i funded the whole thing too. it took a few weeks and it was stressful having other people drive me around. but all of that went away when my friend and i got the engine back in and started it up for the first time. it put a huge smile on my face.

A lot of good advise here

I gotta tell you ..........
Since I have been fooling around with these cars for so long ............

Well ... I guess I'm guilty of not being able to remember how it was when
I got started and I tend to dismiss things that might cause a problem for
a noobie

You can run into things like ..........
snapping a bolt off
vacuum leaks from not understanding proper torque procedures
and others for sure

Adam is right about having someone with experience would be a great help
for a first timer.

I don't mean to say you can't do it yourself

I guess I should have said .............

Find yourself some form of transportation
and
If it takes two or three days or even a week ... You got no worries

Good Luck ... which ever way you go

My thoughts exactly

Doing a h/c/i swap for the first time is going to take a while.

I understand the whole daily driver thing, which is when I did my first h/c/i swap.

Drive it down to Arkansas, give me a heads up and we will get it going
