Ok boys and girls gather round as a long time ago in a garage far away there was this 17 year old kid that had souped up his 2002 Honda Accord with a few exhaust mods and a jackson racing roots type SCer. He was a rich little fella that didnt quite have as many brain cells as he had pocket cash. The story starts as I was asked by a friend of a friend to help this young man get faster.
Apparently this setup he had was only netting him 10.06 in the 1/8th mile and he had to be in the 9s. He came to my shop and wanted a shot of NAWS put on to cool the intake charge of the blower. I did a good bit of research as I had never had experience with this setup and imports alike before. I started installing the nitrous kit on the vehicle as he watched closely over my shoulder. I also went over the do's and dont's regarding nitrous. Well after we got most of the kit installed he is sitting in the car purging almost half the bottle out. He was mesmorized by the 4 ft stream into the air. I asked him to be careful and not to waste anymore. He sat in the driver seat waiting impatiently while I worked. He even said, dont worry if you dont get it finished...as long as I can purge at people on the way home, I will be fine.
My problem installing the last step of the kit was to drill a hole into the outter neck of the TB with a tap / die set for the nozzel to mount. I didnt have the required mm tap at the shop. I told him that it would be tomorrow beofre we could finish it up. He agreed. I received a call later that evening from his buddy and he said that they were working on finishing the install by themselves in the dark that evening to go out racing that night and needed to know the proper way over the phone to complete the install. I told him that once they got the right tap to be sure they stuffed a shop rag into the TB drill the hole with the tap set and pull out the rag. this would pull out any shavings of metal and not get into the motor. He said " Piece of cake, thanks" and hung up. About 45 minutes went by and I received a distressing call from the boy. Apparently he did as I told him, but forgot one important detail.... he drilled the hole, installed the nitrous jet and nozzel , but did not remove the rag. He just simply put the intake boot back on with the rag and shavings still in the TB. He went to crank up the car and after a few seconds of bangs, whines and tinks it cut off. He realized at that point what he done. I went to his house and found that it had sucked the rag down into the motor destrying the SCer blades. I couldnt tell what damage had been done until we got it back to the shop. Well, we wound up takign the motor out and basically apart to find that the SCer impeller was bent badly, the rag had gotten sucked all the way down and messed up every valve and rod known to man. I could not believe the damage that a small red shop rag could cause. He wound up having to scrap the charger and have a new engine put in the car. Needless to say that the moral of our story is first and foremost Buy a car with enough horsepower that you wont have to spend thousands of dollars converting it to something it was not meant to do. Secondly if you cant change your own oil then dont even say the words Blower, Nitrous or Racing.
This is a true story, but played out like a camp fire horror story.
