My set up is found in my sig, my question is what advantage is there to be had (performance wise) in advancing my timing from the 12* it's been at during break in, to 16* as I've heard is ideal. reason I ask rather than try is the car is sleeping till spring, so I have to ask from those of you who are in the know.
Thanks,
Derek.

Advancing your timing(without getting into detonation) allows your motor to start building cylinder pressure sooner, thus having more push when it starts the power(down) stroke. Bump your timing 2 degrees and drive it, make sure you've got no detonation, if that works, try 16.

hmmmm. i think you are thinking of mechanical advance (i.e. degreeing a cam). advancing ignition timing simply changes how soon (or late) the spark ignites the mixture. i could be missing something though.....

Yes ignition timing is what I am inquiring about, I found mostly stock the timing had little noticable diference going from 10-14*. Now with a more agressive setup than I was previously running I was wondering if there would be a more noticable gain in running higher advance(say 16* rather than 12). Again I'd go try it for myself but tis the season to be parked in the garage. Oh by the way Hissin I couldn't help but notice you were making a new freind over on the other tread..he seems nice eh? :nice:

it really is a feel thing, i think. as you know, one can advance too far and while perhaps not hearing detonation, performance can suffer a smidge. i still just advance till i get some ping and back it off till i dont. short of tuning, logging, etc, im not sure one could discern a difference. perhaps Joe's SOTP test would work for all practical purposes.

i run anywhere from 10-15* (10* timing in 110* ambient temps, 15* in winter = 60-80*F ambient temps. i live a quarter mile from the sun) and dont know that i notice a difference. i think it is in my head. :(

i think my new friend likes Michael more than me. :rlaugh:

i saw that too LOL as for the timing, basically what HISSIN50 said. Also, usuallly, people that run aluminum heads can run a few degrees more without detonation. usually aluminum headed peeps run about 16-18.
