I have a question about the stock timing chain. I took the front cover off and on the bolt that holds the cam gear on there was a washer/L shaped bracket on it. I was wondering 1. what is was, 2. what does it do and 3. do I need to install it with my new timing chain. Thanks guys

It was held on by the bolt that holds the cam gear to the cam. I took that bolt off then slide the timing chain off the crank snout. I haven't taken the thrust plate off yet. I'm not sure if that made any sense, hopefully it did tho. I just want to make sure if I need to keep it or not. Thanks

You might mean the eccentric oil slinger/drive lobe that was used on older applications apparently.

I only know of it because it has to be removed for a 5N95 timing cover to fit (if we are talkin about the same part).

Good luck.

I was just about to post that, I was readin the 5.0 mag and it had a picture of a timing chain with the fuel pump essentric (sp). This was a full circle but it was in the same spot as where the part I am talking about is. Do you think I need to install it back on when I put the new timing chain on? Thanks guys

Nick, I can think of no reason why you need it (it shouldnt be there in the first place AFAIK - it's kinda like an appendix). But let's wait for one of the smart folks to chime in with confirmation just to be sure.

I would leave it, Ford engineers with years of experience with the old 302 have way more education and reasons than we do.

It probably slings some oil around for helping lube the chain too. I kept mine.

As mentioned, if it's not for a 5N95 timing cover, you should be fine to leave it. Otherwise it can do some damage.
