This is the end line of my "pop" sound through the intake...

If you are interested.

I ended up at 18*BTDC...With the spout in that's like 28*. The "POP" noise was gone now. I stood back and let it idle for 5min. or so...It made the pop noise one time, (but not as sharp/loud as before) when the revs dropped then came back up. Other than that when the engine gets hot it's real healthy. I think I may even bump the timing up 20* and see how it does. With the timing advanced to the way it sits right now, it revs up quicker/better than with it at 15*.

But here's the thing...

Timing was at 28* with the spout plugged in.
Reved it up with my hand and watched the timing light. As soon as I reved it up it jumped past the 40* mark (banancer doesn't read higher than that.) But then comes back down to ~32* when it leveled off around 3000rpm.
I DID just replace my old 160,000MI+ balancer with a new Pioneer unit....?
I am using alum. heads...But this seems like alot of timing...

What's going on here?

Just set it with the spout out and forget it. that a lot of timing.. My car slowed down anything above 16 degrees.. Are you just changing the timing around and listining or actually dyno or track tuning the car, cause if your just listining in the driveway your never going to really no if your making progress..

Yeah the car just seems to like more timing...
I take it out and drive it...
But when I back off the timing at idle it starts to "break up"....
That's how I got to this high timing setting in the first place...

Eh, i guess whatever works. Me personally, i would try to get it to run without breaking up at 10 degrees first.. whatever it is could be costing ya a lil more HP. I was lookin at your car domain site, and Its actually a pretty good build up, Def a sleeper... :D

If it was me I would think the timing has skipped at the timing chain or the distributor is a tooth or so off. Usually anything over 18 degrees you gain nothing but if it skipped timing retard direction I can see your car running better when you advance.

I'm going to repeat what Quikstang said - set the engine timing with the SPOUT out. The SPOUT signal is what the computer uses to advance the timing. There is a considerable difference between the SPOUT in and out readings, which is the way it is supposed to be.

From you picture posted on the Corral, the air intake in the engine compartment is a definite no no. This has probably done more to create your problems than anything else. The wash from the fan upsets the airflow through the MAF and causes strange problems. It picks up hot air from the engine compartment. The stock setup is better than what you have now. It doesn't have the fan wash problem and it picks up the cold air from the fenderwell. Pick up some PVC pipe & flex duct from Home Depot or Lowes and fab what you need to move the filter to the inner fenderwell.

I will tell you that there is no such thing as "one tooth off" on the distributor position. As long as you can get the timing set (with the SPOUT out) to properly line up with the marks, it is good.
