Ok I have been having a problem with backfiring through the intake. So I have replaced the control module, distributor, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. I have stabbed my distributor over and over. I set my timing to 13 and put the spout back in and it still hesitates and pops through the intake. Last night I decided to try something different so I pulled the spout connector out and locked timing in at 36*. Now it is running great??? I know this is not a good fix. I know there is a problem but I don't know how to fix it. Do any of you guys have any ideas?

Try cleaning your MAF and look at the voltage on the TPS should be 1vdc with the key on and the motor off.

Those were among the first things I tried. The TPS checks out great and the Maf is really new but I cleaned it anyway. I think it has something to do with the timing or what controls the timing when the spout is plugged in.

First, check your coil. Replace it with a known working coil from a buddy's car if you can to see it that's the fix. The next possibilities include jumped timing chain / gear, spun distributor gear, or simply an improperly indexed distributor.

I have checked the timing gear and the chain because I just recently had to do an oil pump swap so I thought I would check the chain for slack. It all checked good. The distributor gear is good as I have just put a new distributor in. It is definately indexed correctly, TDC and rotor pointing in the correct direction...etc.
I also checked to make sure at TDC the HB is pointing directly at 0

Ill bet your balancer is bad making the ring move. This is what happened to my 86, replace it and set the timing at 10 now I do not have any issues.

The valvetrain is good and the Harmonic Balancer is new. I checked the Balancer marks with TDC and it is dead on.

Usally a backfire through the intake is a timing/valve train issue. If a intake valve is not closing properly you could be back-firing through the intake. I would start with going over the valve train to make sure you don't have an issue there. Then I would start to play with the timing.

I would swap the distributor with your friends, if you have one....I had a similar problem a couple months ago, $10 distributor from ebay fixed it.
