I have a 88 2.3 auto...How much does the timing supposed to advance when you plug the spout back in? I am only getting a 4 to 6 deg. advance on mine..I been trying to straighten out some problems on the car, done fixed several things, still need to install a new timing belt. But something seems to have this thing running rich..getting no mileage what so ever...done used a little over a half tank of gas and not got but like 100 miles on the tripmeter Something deffinately not right...Any help would be appreciated!!! Well off to the parts store for a timing belt for now

Well i installed the new timing belt this evening,.Test drove it up the road and back..thing loads up bad idiling but clears up when you get into the throttle...Tired of messing with this thing today...Gonna see if there any codes in it tomorrow and also jack it up and make sure there is no fuel leaks anywhere contributing to the suckky mileage...for what its gettin would think there is a *blown* big block in the damn thing........If anyone has any suggestions to try or to check ,please let me know!!!........**THANKS**

**EDIT**......Also while i had the timing light hooked up..I checked to see how much the timing was going up when connecting the *spout* up...it is varying from 10 to 20 degrees

Not sure I follow you.

With the spout out the base timing should sit dead on 10* and shouldn't move when you rev it. When plugged in the spout might sit at 20, bounce around a little and almost dissappear when you rev it. That sets base timing and tells you the system is advancing. Sounds like that part is working fine.

the base timing is around 14 deg...with the spout in the timings jumps around from 24 to 34 dont get any higher when it revs...I dont think it was advancing when it revs..but i will double check that tomorrow also

Well been checking a few things this morn so far...Found no majior fuel leaks.Timing actually retards when first hit the throttle and returns to where it was dont go past the 34 i think was the highest it gets with the spout in...Checked the codes..i have a few books that give diff meanings for them so not exactly poss on what they mean....But as follows...KOEO = 23,89,41.....KOER = 13,14,21,22.23,25,42,73...........about codes for everything while its running ...not sure where to start!!!!!!!....i know the tps is not adj. no slots in it..and its at .61 .. timing like i said bfore is 14 base i think it was.I have some parts i could prolly switch out to see if it helps from cars i have stripped..I was trying to straighten the car out to put it up for sale, wasnt aware of all this, the car been setting was hit in the front a little and i replaced the front clip from a car i stripped....Well need advice!!What to try first!!..lol...the KOEO codes..from what i gather 23 is the TPS..i got 2 diff despriptions for 89,one is something about the lookup convertor,if so..thats understandable..no longer has overdrive trans in it..3 spd auto now..is a wire that was hooked to the other tranny nowhere for it to go on other trans.... and the 41 code is lean..which dont make since...im sorry this is so long..Ill shut up ..LOL..AND WAIT FOR A RESPONSE AND MAYBE I CAN JUST ANSWER WHAT YA'LL MIGHT NEED TO KNOW.MAYBE on of ya smart guys can postme some answers

WTF is up with all those codes It reminds me off the time when my CAI came a part on my 93'LX. If I was you I would probly make sure I didn't have any vaccum leaks. It may not be the reason but it sure sounds like the crapy ton of codes I got off my car when my CAI broke

I've seem to have mis placed my code book but the 42 I think is running rich. but I can't remember for sure. If it was me and I know this well sound gay but try anyways. Unplug the O2 sensor connector and make sure its clean of corrosion and clean if need be. Try and wiggle the ECT sensor plug up and down to make sure its got a good connection ( its a pain to unplug with uppwer intake on). The O2 sensor maybe shoot but I would check more stuff like vaccum leaks again before I start buying parts

Well done some more tinkering...Rerring to the sensor under the upper half of the intake..just happened to have a new one here so i replaced it..Shooting in the dark while i was messing with it i switched out the coil just in case it may have been week..As far as vacume leaks..it had one before ,the modulator valve was bad ,loosing vacume..but i done replaced it....Used a vacume pump and checkedeverything i could find and nothing showed up..Alsio hooked up a vacume gauge...not sure what these things is supposed to have in good running cond..but it has about 14in and its steady dont fluctuate at all...Drove it around for abit afterwards..seemed to help some,no hesitation in it now...havent checked the codes yet but dont think it is right yet,as i didnt drive but maybe 5 miles or so and actually the gas hand moved ..Thing has about got me baffled..Only thing i think it might could be is maybe the O2 sensor or maybe some leaking injectors...I dunno It's about got on my last nerve...
