changing the timing in my car... is 16 degrees about right for stock application?? or should i go less??

If you plan on running at least 92 oct. then you will be fine.

Raise it 2* at a time, starting from stock 10*, until you get pinging, then drop it 1* until it doesn't ping any more.

I turned my timing down on my car and i think it livened it up a bit.

every car is different - Dave's advice is spot on. things like carbon build up in the chambers can artificially raise compression. also all cars run different temps, have different cleanliness of MAF wires, etc. all of this affects pinging and when it will occur. good luck.
