So my question is if you go higher like a 45-50 profile, is this better sidewall strength then say a 35-40 profile? I was just curious if going lower is better for strength and stability in the corners or is going higher better?

Thanks,

lower the profile the stronger the sidewall has to be. 35 series is what i run all around on 18" rims. The sidewalls are quite stiff. Different manufacturers range on sidewall strength and depending on model. The Yokohama AVS ES-100 tire has very strong sidewalls.. and pretty much any Z rated 18" tire in 35 series is going to be adequate for handling.

35 sidewall for anything wider than 255 on a 9 or bigger inch rim thickness (NOT HEIGHT). 45 for 245s and 275s on 8 inch rims, 275s on 9 inch rims...35 sidewall. I've played with these numbers over and over and tested them on the track countless times. This is how it is on my car (245/45 17 in front, 315/35 17 in back).

I was thinking of going 255/40 all the way around with BFG's and was curious if going lower is going to make the strength of the sidewall less? Oh they will be on stock rims 17x8.

Thanks,

That should be fine. Not perfect, but you wont ever have a problem or anything.

Well it would be better than using 255x45 correct? As far as sidewall strength?
Thanks,

Depends on tire, some tires might not even come in a 40 sidewall or 45 at the 255 size. 40 and 45 are a very minute difference so really i don't think there will be any problem using 40.

255/40/17 is shorter than the stock tire by a little.. and 255/45/17 is taller than the stock tire by a little.. just be aware of that.. Remember changes in the rear size diameter wise will effect your speedo a tad.

I have a Hypertech programmer that will take care of that.

thats good.. ur set... Before spending about 6-800 on tires.. look at ebay.com and search "afs wheels tires" and you can find some 03 cobra's with tires for around a grand. That way you'd have some 17x9's which handle 275/40's all around. Having at least a 9 inch wheel all around does wonders for handling.

Going from 17x8's stock to 18x9 AFS was night and day.. I got my new 18x9 AFS's for 415 from ebay.
