Hi
What size tires can I put on a 97 Mustang GT without getting problems with clearance. I would like to stay with the 17x8 stock rims and the width of 245 front and rear. So the alternatives would be 245/50/17 or 245/55/17. What would work?

You might check into 255/40r17.....they're just wider than 245, the actual difference is minimal, but they seem to look a lot wider. I've got them on 17x9 10th anniversary cobras and they look awesome. The 245/55r17 will look like a truck tire on your car.

255/45/17 is a good choice and fills out the wheel opening nicely. A friend of mine has these on his 95GT and no clearance issues. Its just a little wider and taller, but not enough to throw your speedo off more than 1 mph at 65mph. 275/40/17 are a bit much on 17x8s, a lot of sidewall flex, will take some getting used to, but I it looks cool. This would be my 1st choice if you were going with 17x9 rims.

Thanks for the input. 255/45/17 is an alternative. Still, I think the tires on the new Mustangs GTs look quite good and they are 235/55/17.

But the new GT's fender is larger to accomodate the taller tire.

I don't think you could run anything taller than 245/50/17 before you start getting problems.

I don't see why you would want a taller sidewall anyway. It will lead to sloppier handling as you get more sidewall flex with taller tires.

There's a good calculator for figuring out compatible tire sizes.
