Tire size question - 50 vs 55

My '88 originally came with the 10-hole 15" wheels and 225/60R15 tires. I have a set of 16" pony wheels that need tires (looking at a set of General Exclaim UHP). I know the OEM tire for the ponys was a 225/55R16 but if you crank the numbers, a 225/50R16 is almost the exact same rolling diameter as the 225/60R15.

So I guess my question is which makes the most sense, going with the 225/50 or the 225/55? My LX has C-springs so sits a bit lower on the wheels than OEM.

lower profile and wider....skinny tires look goofy

The 225/60r15 should bad the same height as the 225/55R16 (aprox 25.6"). The 225/50R16's are only a round 24.8" tall.

I know...that size is very appealing but I'm worried they will rub up front. My car is an '88 remember. It seems as though there are mixed results about fender contact up front, but I might do those out back. How do these look? Do they stick out of the wheel wells?

i have 225/55's up front and 235/55's out back on my car. no rubbing problems anywhere.

I've seen folks running 255 width tires front/rear with 17's, so 245/50/R16 shouldn't be an issue. That's the size I'll be running when I throw a set of Pony rims on my notch.

On my 89 245s would rub very slightly on the fender extension up front, I trimmed and fixed that. And would also rub on a full lock, but did not rub the fender, rubbed the A arm I believe.

245/50s out back wont be an issue, I have them on my 93 4 cyl!

I ran pony wheels with 245/50/16's on my '88. The rear was fine and the front only rubbed at full lock. My car was lowered pretty low as well. It was tolerable. I just learned to not turn the wheel to full lock.

I know run 17's with 245/45/17's on them.


If you were to stay with 225,s i'd run the stock 225/55/16

I run 225/50...they are a tad thinner, but not by much, they still look good as far as I'm concerned. No rubbing whatsover, my car is also lowered, and I put them side by side with a 225/60 r15 and it was nearly the exact same height, almost exactly.
