Tire Spin question

If it doesn't have posi-trac it won't break both tires loose. If it has a "open" rearend then only one tire will spin. There should be a axle code inside the driver side door jam. On my GT the axle code is "LE" which is 3.27/Loc(posi-trac). Your code might be X5 or Z5 which is a 3.27/conventional(no posi). You could also lift the back tires off the ground and turn one tire. If the opposite tire is turning the same direction, you have a posi rearend. If the opposite tire turns in a different direction, you have a "open" rearend. I thought all newer GT's came with traction control and posi trac. Pearl02.

Like I said before, check the inside drivers jam for the axle code. He may not have posi-trac. In that case he won't be able to spin both tires. He can also do what I suggeted before with the tires. This is a very simple test and it won't take a few minutes to figure out. Pearl02.

Ok, if your stepping on the brakes doing a burnout...chances are that your standing one the brake a bit to hard and one wheel is locking/unlocking before the other. When you roll out of it, that one wheel is going to continue to spin by itself until the traction lock kicks in...which could be a while.

I wouldnt think that your traction lock is bad, it's just your technique and/or your brakes.

If one tire has substantially more traction than the other,even with a Trac-loc,then only one will spin. The trac-loc is IMO only woth 20,000 miles at best. Every time you go around a curve the clutches wear. There is a procedure to test the Trac-loc, It involves jacking up one wheel and checking the break away torque on the axle,which if memory serves me should be around 200 ft lbs.

I have to disagree with you one this one. Trac-loc's should last much longer than 20k miles. I have seen many stock 100k mile trac-loc's running strong. Hell, mine has atleast 50k miles on it. I bought her with 160k miles on the odo, and have never replace the trac-loc. I also have 100++ dragstrip runs with 5-10 second burnouts on each run. I never do a one wheel peel.

Maybe if you beat the living hell out of your car on a dialy basis. My 1991 GT had 91,000 miles on the original Traction Lok clutch packs and it worked fine.

all gt's have posi. its part of the package. as for traction control its an option on all 99+'s.

I powerbraked it and it stayed there for about 30 seconds white smoking that tire, i let off the brake and it just kept spinning but going forward but only 1 tire broke loose.

Congratulations on totally wiping out whatever posi clutches you had left with that one wheel burnout. Best bet is to tell the dealer that you noticed in the rain that only one wheel spins, you may get a rebuilt carrier out of them. Good luck.
