Tires rub exhaust

Car is a 1988 mustang GT. It has a cervini cobra rear bumper with exhaust for a cobra bumper. I have the pony rims and 225/55/16 tires. The tires rub the exhaust. I check everything and the exhaust is mounted properly. Whats the deal

Can you adjust it at all? My mac setup I can slide around a bit on the rearmost hangers to get more clearance when needed. Mine are pretty tight and rattle sometimes. Not against the tires, but I can just adjust it in the hangers to get a bit more clearance.

I didnt really try, but I got under there to peak and didnt really see where I could adjust it. I can pull on the exhaust and get it away from the tire, but haven't figured a way to secure it. I figured maybe there was another problem causing my clearance issues. Muffler shop maybe

I run MAC cat back and with 275/40/17's on the back I did have to make small adjustments with the tails to clear everything...took about 20minutes.

You can try to adjust the pipes inward with the rubber isolators or by bending the hangers on the pipes. Enjoy!

If your exhaust is completely welded, you may be plain old screwed.

This is why the bassani setup is so good. The clamps will hold through time, and it can be adjusted basically forever.

I'd take the easy way out and go with dumps
I agree with these guys though. Loosen up your exhaust, and wiggle the pipes around until they're clear of the tires. I actually wore a hole through a tailpipe from it rubbing once, so I'd get on this ASAP. Had to replace the tire after it happened from the sidewall being worn out.

First you have to remember he has a cobra rear bumper. Dumps would look horrible, they are for GT's and race cars only.


I've spent my life battling exhaust rub in my car.
Problem is if it is welded and it's hitting the tire, likely twisting it to alter it's location will cause it to hit somewhere else. Especially if it's hitting a tire as narrow as his.
Look for it to hit these places when you move it.
A. upper control arms
B. Gas Tank
C. Frame

I care not to mention the number of times I've had to go under that car to attempt to adjust the exhaust to keep it from creating a god awful vibration off some damn part of the car. Glad to say after the upper and lower arm install I spent some good time getting it right...I hope to heck I don't have to remove it again for anything.
