To seal or not to seal, intake manifold gasket

I've had a couple of people say to use Silicon Gasket Sealer in place of the cork seals when replacing to the intake manifold gasket on a 68 289 - 2V. Anybody have an opinion on this? Thanks

if your talking about the cork that seals the back and front of the intake then yes i totally agree. use the ultra black as it will hold up agains the oil in the lifter valley. use a big thick line of it and slap it on there finger tight. after bout 5 minutes then i tourque it down. make sure your intake gaskets seal too cdause you dont want water getting into your lifter valley an into the oil.

I would recommend throwing the cork gaskets as far as you can fling them. I use a new type of gasket sealer called "the right stuff". This is the same gasket sealer that the big three all use today. It works great and I have never had a leak since using it.

Ive taken my intake manifold off twice and both times I have used the seals that came with the gasket set and have had no leaks thus far.

I agree with using them. New end seals even come with adhesive backing so that they don't move around.

Ditto here on not using the cork! Save it for the wine bottles.

Intake Gasket Sealer

Hell yes. Toss those cork things in the trash and put down a good bead of RTV Silicone front & rear. Those cork things will blow and then all of a sudden, walla, you have an oil leak.

I agree the gaskets suck, silicone is all Ill use in that application.

I just installed a performer rpm intake and used the cork end pieces. Well, the rear one moved a little and didn't seal. Then I threw them in the trash and used silicone with no problems.
I say trash 'em.

only use the cork if they have the sticky, not all do. i prefer the chuck cork and caulk method myself though
