I was thinking that I might be able to make custom torque box reinforcments out of sheet metal and bending them and welding into place. I know about the battle boxes and all but thought why not make a full box support around the factory boxes and weld them in place.

Anyone do this and whats your thoughts?

RNH Performance. Rick 91 GT's shop. Sells them. Don't know if they are full on like you are thinking, but that's what nummustang was referring to.

Yes, I should've been more clear with my first post. RNH has them, I know MM has them and I'm sure other companies sell battle boxes of some sort.

I'm not sure if these are what you're looking for or not, but when I hear torque box reinforcements, I think of those.

i made my own.... cost me a total of $10 for the metal plus the hardware from home depot (like $3) i went down to a local metal place and grabed a peice from their scrap pile and had them bend it to a 90* angle for me then i made them as big as i wanted, i did mine when i did my LCA's since everthing was off the car anyway. all you have to do is fabricate one side then just make an exact copy

fun little project if you like doing this kinda stuff (like me)

peice of sheet metal i started with

off the car

on the car (ignore the rust this was jsut a mock up)

inside the car

i hope thats what your talking about

Your reinforcements look pretty good for home made, but your bolts look like they are Grade 5s, I would stick Grade 8s in there to be safe.

the bolt that holds the control arm is actually stronger than grade 8 i ordered them through work. the 4 bolts that hold it to the floor are probably grade 5 like you said, but with 4 of them per side i see other stuff breaking before the bolts do

yeh the reason I am asking about making my own is because those reinforcments only support 1 side of the torque boxes. I was thinking about reinforcing all sides with steel, like boxing off the factory boxes and welding that in place.

the other side is the frame rail..... thats pretty strong as it is. i geuss you could make a plate but becuase the bolt its actually inside the frame rail you would need a longer bolt. when people rip their TQ boxes its on the other side

Do you have any measurements from when you made yours?

yeh I have a crack in the front corner of mine, not where the reinforcment would be. Guess if that what every one uses there should be no problem then. Thanks for the replies, I'm installing them with Drag radials in the spring. I just took the car for its last ride of the season tonight.

Weld up the crack/s, weld up the stock seams that are only spot welded and add a re-enforcement kit of your choice and you should be near battle proof.
