torque converter question

I have a 93 mustang SSP coupe that is factory equipped with an AOD tranny. I have since modded the motor a bit and decided to add a good converter and found a used art carr 9" or 9.5" with this number inscribed on it, ac26035 3-82 9-00. the folks @ art carr tell me it's a 2800-3000 stall which I believe to be what I need for my setup but heres the catch, it's a non lockup. this will not be a race car just a daily driven street duty on the weekends car. I tried putting this thing in there but forget about it the center shaft needs to be mated to something in the converter. My question is can this converter be opened up and converted to a lock up type? and if so would it be worth it?
 
I think you can make a lockup converter not lockuop, but don't think you can do the opposite. I'm no pro with these though, maybe someone else can give you a definite answer.

Probably not worth it anyway -- I'd imagine it would cost you a couple hundred bucks at least to have it done, and you still don't even know if it will be right for your setup.

An AOD trans locks up in 3rd and 4th gear. It's mechanically controlled, no electronics like in the AODE.
 
The 93s had an AOD in it. Its okay to use for your setup, but it will generate a lot more heat and you will need a one piece input shaft. You probably will also suck up more gas. Its better to go with a lockup if you are driving mostly on the srteet. I dont think either you can convert it to a lockup, but place to call is ART CARR themselves. Its just a choice you will have to make.....Save gas or eat gas...
 
Not totally sure, but I think the change from aod to aode was when they went from the two piece input shaft to a plain old lockup conveter. At least the followon trans the 4R70W has a lockup converter.

If you could do it, I think the combination of the high stall, and the lockup would be killer. Not sure, but there may be a valvebody mod to for the aod that does not lock in until 4 th. I would call Bauman Engineering or Lentech. The Bauman website has lots of good info.

Direct drive is a 1:1 ratio, which is third. Fourth is higher, making it overdrive. What does this have to do with a lockup torque converter again?

EDIT: Giving you the benefit of the doubt -- maybe you have this tranny confused with another. :shrug:

The AOD has a two-piece input shaft that allows for partial lockup in 3rd gear and full lockup in 4th. It has no sensors or electronics, it is purely a mechanical function. It can be eliminated with a torque converter setup or an input shaft setup for it, among other things -- but not in factory form.

Maybe you should go back to your own tranny shop and tell them this is what you think -- I'm sure they can help clear this all up for you. :rolleyes:
The guy wants to know about lockup for an AOD and I am saying that an AOD has no lockup. Not mechanical or electric. If you open up the converter for an AOD it will not have a lockup clutch in it. Unless you have bought a special one. Then you have to change the valvebody and add a switch to the side of the case for it be electric. i have seen this in a gears mag.

I understand exactly what you're saying -- you just happen to be wrong about the AOD and it's lockup feature.

I put an aftermarket VB in mine, with a higher stall converter -- and my OD is controlled electrically with a solenoid inside the tranny now, but not the lockup. The lockup is still there in 3rd and 4th, just like with the factory parts.

I'm sure I can find dozens and dozens of links to demonstrate the lockup in an AOD -- but why don't you just double check your facts, I'm sure you'll find you're thinking of some other tranny, as the AOD without a doubt locks up in 3rd and 4th.
 
The stock converter in an aod is a lock up converter. I've got one and many others have one too. No mustang left the factory with a non lock up converter with the aod. I had to get a different converter and input shaft just like 89 Mustang said.

As far as the original question goes; Art Carr may be able to change your converter over to a lock up style. I had EDGE change my lockup 9.5" that I got from them to a non lock up for drag racing. Art Carr may be able to do it too. Call them and check.
