Is it worth for me to go back and torque plate hone my block. It has just been bored .030 over? I had my head up my #ss and didn't request for it to be done. The guy wants $150 to go back. I think the reason why it cost more is because he will have to hone the entire .010 to end up at .040. What do you think, is it worth it for my application? I will make around 425 to 450 HP on my 351w steet engine.

I would not pay anyone to hone a block for me. Honing takes 20 minutes and requires little if no skill at first and anyone can do it. Just go done to auto zone and buy a hone and do it yourself. Bead hone or pad hone your choice, I prefer bead hones but thats me. Chuck it up in a drill. oil down the cylinder and have at it. 150 is robbery. The machine work has already been done, all honning does is help break the glaze and scuff the cylinder to promote ring seal. Why would you need to use a torque plate ?? the cylinder walls will be honed no matter what. If you cylinder was not round the boring machine would have cured that problem already.

the torque plate hone is to check for trueness of the bore i think like straight up and down not for cross hatching.

Why would you use a hone to check trueness of the cylinder ? And how would it even do it ? Thats what they bore the block for, with or with out a torque plate and the use a bore gauge to check the specs. A hone has nothing to do with the cylinder beeing true or not. Even if it wasnt true, you would have to set there with a hone for a long long time to remove material and a hone takes the shape of what ever bore it is put in, so if it was not true the hone would simply duplicate the same pattern. Just cant see how a torque plate has any affect on the honing of a cylinder wall.

They use a plate to ensure the cylinder walls will be the same as it will be with the head on. If you don't, you hone it, then throw on the heads the cylinder bore will actually change slightly from the stress put on the block when the heads are torqued down. But yes it's a rip off at 150 bucks. Like oorah said, it's easy to do and you don't need the torque plate for your ap. The high dollar guys use honing when the bore is slightly off. Don't worry about it. slap the motor together and 100 shot to break in the rings. Heheh that'll straighten them out.
