TPS Question

I need a new TPS and I believe I have one from Autozone. I have a 1992 5.0

The number on the TPS says #E6AF-9B989-CA It never fit tightly in the hole where the TPS connects to the Throttle body. Is this even the right one. According to 5.0 resto it is for a 86-88 mustang.

So my question is. Did I have the wrong one on all along?

I mean it connects to the harness but just never seemed to fit on top of the TB securely.

I widened the screw holes on mine so I could set the voltage. .998 I think it's been a while. 87-92 should be the same part, they use the same tb. 86 has a smaller tb.

How far off is it? In the hole that the sensor sits in there should be a plastic spacer ring thing, I never noticed it till i went to swap sensors, the plastic piece stayed on the sensor so when i put the new one in it was way loose. with the sensor in and no screws there should be no slop side to side

yeah there is nothing like that in there except a little rubber O ring on the very bottom below the thing that turns the notches on the TPS. looks like there is glue residue around the edges where the TPS's raised ring sits in.

but nothing to make it stop from moving in the hole on top of the TB unless i tighten it down then i dont think it moves.

but if something is supposed to be in there to make the TPS to sit better I would like it lol

If I were you I'd take a look at a hardware store, I know that the Ace Hardware by me has plastic washers of various diameters and thicknesses that you could probably make work. It probably won't effect your performance as long as it's tight, but I'm real anal so that's what I'd do lol

The thing on that TB that turns the TPS is 3/8 inch wide and one notch to another is 1/2 inch wide to make full contact on both notches in the TPS. Im not making much contact to to turn the TPS and its ruining the notches.

I put it on like I always did. Its just slipping after a while and destroying the notches

Ya that doesn't sound good. I guess if it's not going in there straight it could be wearing it out. I took some pictures of mine. I'm not sure if it's the same as yours because mine is a 70mm BBK. I hope it helps. I looked all over the garage but I can't find my factory one.

Thanks man! yeah I got a stock size throttle body but that pic helps a lot.

Where the throttle blade shaft is, it just goes straight down where yours looks like its got something for the base of the TPS to sit on.

so I just got a 1 inch diameter hole going straight down

Since i have no idea what that piece is i need to fit around the blade shaft. Maybe the diameter of the shaft and a thick walled rubber hose from the hardware store would help??

Which piece are you missing? The black washer thing in my hand or the piece that is still inside the throttle body? The piece that is in the throttle body I believe is a bearing of some sort. The one in my hand is just a plastic washer that you could probably pick up at a hardware store for 10 cents

Your throttle body looks odd. Doesn't look like a stock mustang throttle body which might be why it doesn't fit right.

Oh wow that looks way different. I can't remember what my old stock one looked like but it looks like someone messed with yours, or like Mustang5L5 said it's not even the correct one... It looks like that bearing piece on yours is too far down and you are missing the plastic spacer. I'm thinking now would be a good time for an upgrade... That'd solve your problem and maybe help your throttle response a little too...

Haha oh god I just got a flashback! A buddy of mine picked up an explorer intake for his 91 5.0 and he used the explorer throttle body. He tore the whole thing apart to get it to work with pieces from the mustang one. I wonder if someone did that to yours, Haus, and forgot how it went or lost pieces or something. I think it was the linkage that was wrong, I can't remember for sure..

I did some searching around on google images and it looks like you are correct about it being a stock one. In that case if it were me I'd just look around for a 65 or 70mm one. I got my 70mm BBK with EGR spacer used for $50 on craigslist. If you don't want to spend the money I guess you could get creative with a washer or a hose like you said. Maybe someone else on here has some better ideas for you too
