Tranny Fulid - Type F Replace Type A?

Hey everyone,

New to the forum. Just purchased a '65 Fastback, had other Mustangs in college and decided to pick up an early present for my upcoming 40th B-day. Needed an eary start on my mid-life crisis.

Just replaced several hoses on the power steering unit and started to refill the reservoir. The dipstick says use Type A tranny fluid, can't find anything but Type F out there. Has Type F replaced Type A?

Sorry, I'm sure this has been covered ad nauseum but can't find an answer anywhere.

I'm sure there will more questions later on. BTW - car runs great, just stopping a few leaks. One of the previous owners cut the dash for a CD player, otherwise the car is pretty straight.

You can use Type F ATF.

Type A and Type F are intended for different hydraulic systems. The Type F used to be used by Ford in their older automatic transmissions because they used asbestos faced bands and clutches. Type A was specified by General Motors because their transmissions used non-asbestos (organic) bands and clutches. Type A was improved upon and superceded by what is now known as DEXRON/MERCON (I think it is up to revision III these days). So in answer to your question...No do not put Type F fluid into a Type A system. Use DEXRON/MERCON.
