tranny leak at the drive shaft

ok i know it might be the tailshaft seal but i have a concern.is the universal in the front supposed to be flush against the tailshaft oris there supposed to be some room?i just put a clutch in the car. its an 89 5.0l coupe

There should be some room, the seal should not come into contact with the U joint other than the shaft.

ok kool so there should be like 2 inches of the smooth shaft showing

I think mine is a little less than 2 inches but I haven't looked under there in a while. Its going to vary from car to car, depending on what else has been done to the car.

2" seems a bit much but should be OK. I'd feel more comfy with 1 to 1.5" post seal contact.

its been a week since i was under there it might be 1.5in
