Tranny/Shifter Issues

I have a 5 speed 98 mustang GT and was driving home from college yesterday on a 700 mile trip, car was shifting fine. I got off the interstate for the last 25 miles of my trip and went to turn from a stop sign and I couldn't get it into 2nd gear. I quickly put it in 3rd without problem to get moving. I then try 4th and it wouldn't go either. But 5th worked fine also.

I stopped at the nearest gas station to try to go through the gears and 1st, 3rd and 5th worked fine, but 2nd, 4th and reverse wouldn't. You can't move the shifter down out of neutral to 2nd, 4th, and reverse, it just feels locked out.

Any ideas on what went wrong?

Does your shifter have shift stop screws? If so, maybe the rear screw vibrated lose and moved in a little, and now it won't let you engage those gears

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it had shift stop screws, but we checked it out this morning and thats exactly what had happened. Both screws were actually loose, so we adjusted them, tightened and it's fixed. I'm relieved thats all it was.
