Tranny tail shaft wiggle

Quick question on my tranny tailshaft. I was trying to find a vibration I've been having and I took my driveshaft off to inspect it. When I did this I noticed that with the driveshaft off I am able to wiggle the tailshaft of the tranny around pretty easily with my fingers. Is this normal or a sign of wear? Should I be concerned or does it all tighten up after inserting the driveshaft back in? Thanks

There's a brass/bronze bushing pressed into the tailshaft housing that the transmission slip yoke fits into. The slop you have may be due to the wear in that bushing. The bushing is available from several sources. Same bushing fits the small output Toploaders and C-4's. David Kee's site OpenDNS has em.

With the slip yoke removed, there is nothing supporting the output shaft except the roller bearing in the main case, so it's normal to be able to wiggle the tip of the shaft.

exactly, stick the output yoke back in and then do the wiggle test. if it moves enough for you to see, then replace the bushing in the tailshaft.
