You most likely have a C-4. "Cruiseomatic" is just name not a type. The C-4 is a fine transmission for a build up. (You "hurd" wrong.)

Hitman, the AOD is a great transmission. It's as strong or stronger than the C-4, plus it has an overdrive.

However, if you're just looking to drive around town, and drag race once in awhile, the C-4 will be cheaper (since you already have it) and also hold up fine.

The '67 has a better valve body for buildups... You can make a C4 just as tough as you want, and it makes a fine racing transmission. I personally, wouldn't trust an AOD for hard racing, but thats just my preference. I wanted alot of strength AND overdrive, so I built up my C4 and added a Gear Vendors under/overdrive unit. Its definitely all I need it to be.

There were no V6's in the early Stangs. You're mistaking the straight six for a V6. Some of the straight 6 C4's will work with small blocks ( 289-302's)

if you plan to drag race on a budget stick with the C4. you can build a really strong C4 for cheap, or buy a fully built C4 from GER for $599. The AOD needs to be built before it can handle the shifting you need to drag race. Doing the 1-D-1 shuffle that you'll be doing doesn't help the longevity of an AOD.

good luck with whatever you decide

The only downside of a 65-66 C4 is the goofy green dot shift pattern and the double shift L-D2-L to go from 1st to 2md while manually shifting. The 67-68 valve body is a bolt-in that eliminates this problem. This is really only an issue if you want to put in a manual shifter and a shift kit. Otherwise not much difference between the years. There are a lot of performance parts available for the C4's. Just change the valve body.
