i have an 02 gt with the stock trans. i was changing the oil last weekend and noticed some fresh fluid on the bottom fo the bell housing. the fluid is red, and i assume that is trans fluid. the car motor has 58k on it, but the trans was replaced by ford and has ~15k on it and is still under warranty. any ideas? i dont drive the car hard, and alot of it is freeway.

Sounds like the trans is leaking fluid out of the front input shaft seal.

thats what i firsts thought, but i was told there is no seal in the front, the only seal is in the back. the dealer said it may be a pump??? i didnt kno a trans had a pump would this be a warranty issue?

Is this an automatic or 5-spd?

If 5-spd there is a seal in the front

If automatic, the torque converter could be leaking and there is a pump insude. It could also be leaking from the dipstick.

If it's under warranty, then i would say it is an issue.

Yup, the real question is auto or manual.

On an auto, the torque converter should have a seal that it slides into, but I've never taken apart an AOD. Either way, if it is under warranty, they should fix it!

I would say shaft seal, but did you install your tri ax,I ask because when I installed mine a week or so ago,I used a silicon type stuff to seal between the shifter and tranny, but for some reason there was a spot that didnt seal properly and after a day or 2 of driving I was seeing a small amount of trans fluid on ground, and when i looked under to see what was up,it looked as if I had fluid leaking from the front and the rear of the tranny,I was about to be lit up thinking the tranny was crap on less than a month old car to me,But I thought i would pull the shifter to check it out and I could see where it was leaking at,more silicon and its fixed.Just a thought.

I don't see how it would be leaking up there. There is no pump in that 5-speed. The gears are simply immersed in oil to the level determined by the fill plug. You might try draining the fluid, making sure the car is level, and then filling until it runs out the fill opening. I hate pumping fluid in so I pour it in from the top thru the shifter linkage opening. Let it sit until the fluid level settles down, then bolt everything back up.

As far as leaking around the shifter, how is fluid getting up in there to fill that area up so that it will leak? If the tranny is overfilled it will certainly leak as when it gets warm, fluid will be forced out. But filled properly, leaking is not common, and is actually quite difficult to make happen. The rear seal usually will only leak if you park pointing up a pretty steep driveway or hill. There's no fluid being pumped around inside that has to be contained by a seal...

BTW, the reason for the silicone around the shifter is not to keep fluid in, it is to keep water _out_...

I have no idea,I drained the fluid,to see how much it had, which was 3.5 quarts. When I resealed the shifter not a problem since...so i dunno how it was happening,it didnt seem to be much in the shifter area.Im not a tranny person and dont know much about them other than the main key parts....never even seen the inside of these trannies.

3.5 quarts sounds high. Which might be your problem. Proper fill level is so it just runs out the fill plug hole. Any more and it is going to work its way out somewhere...

I put a shifter in my buddies bullit. Didn't have any rtv so I just slapped it in. Couple days later I was woundering why evertime I got on it a huge puff of smoke would roll out the back of the car. Massive amounts of fluid can leak from the shifter if not sealed properly

Thank you for backing me on that one...I was starting to think I was an idiot..

I know that it calls for 3.8qts,but alot say to only do 3.25qts,So i figure 3.5 would be ok.

If it's dripping from the very front of the bellhousing it's your front seal. The trans case it's self is also sealed in 2 places with RTV. Just get under there and see where it is coming from
