transmission issues

ok so check it out, I have posted this before a long time ago...but recently I got my transmission checked out

the problem I am having is when the tranny shifts from first to second gear (automatic) I get a really bad jerk

for instance, if I was to merge on the highway and I am pretty much flooring it, the wheels will stop spinning for a split second when it shifts from first to second (you can literally hear the screech)

if I back off the gas the jerk isn't as bad, so that's what I have been doing to hopefully preserve the life of the car to the best of my ability until it gets fixed

SO!, the verdict yesterday was undetermined, they said the issue resides within the transmission and would need to be taken apart...the fix can be anywhere from $500 to $1,800+

I told him that a charge in that range is not something that I could commit to

I talked to him about 20 minutes later and he said he can give me a second option...which is to swap the transmission with a used one (that he will get and install in the car) with 67,000 miles on it (I currently have 82,500 miles) for $1,000 (installed)

that is a realistic option and I have opted for it (nothing has been done just yet)...any opinions? I paid the guy $82 to evaluate the tranny..should I get a second opinion?

lol it's not like I want to incur more analysis charges with other people tho keep in mind

It sounds like your tranny has a problem with the clutch bands between 1 and 2. Rebuilding the tranny would fix it for sure, but you might want to try adding a transmission additive to see if it smooths the shifts out. Dirty tranny fluid will also make any pending problems appear faster and worse, so if the fluid hasn't been changed recently you might want to do that too. Doing those two things might put off having to rebuild the tranny for years, and you'll be out only $50 or so.

Swapping with a used tranny would be just as good as a rebuild, as long as you know it was working when it was pulled. If you look, you might be able to find a wrecked car with low miles that has a tranny that is almost as good as new (avoid a car that was hit in the rear, since the tranny might have taken some of the impact through the driveshaft). Make sure the shop changes the fluid and filter when they do the swap.

It's probably best to do something about this, since a hard 1-2 shift will eventually break something- probably one of the gears in the tranny and then you'll be calling for a tow. Try the cheap stuff first and if that doesn't work you might have to pay for a swap...
