Transmission swap from hell... speedo issue

I swapped my 3-speed manual for a 4-speed a few weeks ago and everything went relatively smoothly for me. But after I installed the speedometer cable that was on the driver's side of the 3-speed into the hole on the passenger's side of the 4-speed... the speedometer didn't work anymore.

SO-- I read up on it and found that apparently I needed to swap out speedometer cable gears. My original one was an 18-tooth gear that was RH geared.. so I bought an 18-tooth gear that's LH turn from David Kee.

After jacking the car up and draining the fluid AGAIN, etc..etc.. reinstalling the cable that BARELY reaches and has a pretty tight arc in it to make the turn... I refilled the transmission with fluid and finished the job.

Bad News:
The speedometer STILL doesn't work. I noticed on the 3-speed when I looked into the speedometer cable hole I could see a gear in there but I can't see one through the 4-speed hole. Although the angle isn't the same to look through I'm concerned that I'm missing a gear in there.

Anyone know anything about this?? I just want this car on the road already!
