i have an 85 5.0 with AODE tranny. i'm going to be rebuilding the motor and swapping the transmission, and i want a T5 5spd tranny. i'm wondering if i can use a transmission from an 87-93 5.0?

tell me want you think.

tranny

are you sure it's a AODE. A aod(E) is a computer controled trans. In 1985 mustang it should have a standard aod. I'm with mook on the t-5! If you are going to change trans go with something less problems, like a tremc or a c-4!

i thought i read AODE on the transmission pan, but i could be mistaken. what do you mean problems? i thought the stock T5 was a good tranny? i'm on a strict budget right now. only $600 a month can go into the car. also, i have that POS fuel injection that came with the AT mustangs in 85, should i swap that out with a carb? or just get the stock unit rebuilt also

First things first. The t5 is a fantastic transmission, and is very reliable. It is common for them to last 100+k miles. However, when you get hardcore drivers like us, we abuse them, and t5's don't like abuse too much, and that's why they get the bad rep. A t5 with a proper clutch adjustment, and NO powershifting should last you a very long time, especially with that throttle body fuel injection you've got. No reason why a good t5 can't handle the 180 horses or so that he's putting out. ALso, on a side note, I'm very local to you, and live in so cal, and have done this swap. Hit me up for any advice

What??

It already has a TBI type setup on it, and the manual trans cars of that year came with carbs -- I don't think anyone could argue it wouldn't be considered smog legal.

Exactly. California law will allow you to do whatever to that car that was offered by Ford. 5 speed gt's for your year had the holley 4 bbl and alum intake stock from ford. It will no problems for you to swap over to that design. Stay with carb certified parts, or get a used take off setup from an 83-85 carb'd gt. You'll still have the non roller engine, but at least you will have a better fuel induction system.
