Transmission woes

I recently bought and installed a used World Class T5. I picked it up pretty cheap and it was to replace the T5 I blew up last fall. the previous owner is a frind of my buddy's and he said it shifted fine with no syncos problems. But I'm now having a funny grinding when I shift from 1st to 2nd gear, but it only does it when I take off in first and shift to second fast as I were if I were racing. All the other gears are fine to shift too and normal driving is also fine with no issues in all gears. I used 2 1/2 qaurts of GM syncromesh as I heard it was supposed to be the best. A friend of mine just told me to try using gear oil and that should help get rid of the grinding, is this true, and if so what weight?

Thanks.

I'm not a transmission expert but I would say your second gear syncrho has seen better days. I'm not sure your supposed to use the GM syncromesh in a T5...I know from the factory they have ATF Mercron/Decron III fluid...

Gear oil is awfully thick...I wouldn't use it...

Hopefully some people will chime in that know more than I do on this:nice:

How high are you shifting(Rpm)? Where is the cluch pedal set? Close to the floor or up top? I have found for myself, to shift fast 1-2 above 5000rpm the clutch has to right at the top, making sure that it is fully engaged when out, not riding on the throw out bearing. It might work, or it could be the syncro. :D

I would stay away from the gear oil :notnice:

good luck :)

try using some redline mt45 trans fluid. i had a 5 speed behind a AGZE and it shifted hard from 1st to 2nd. i tech recommended redline so i put that in and within a couple of days the shifting got easier and smoother. it's a little pricey being synthetic.

Shifting around 5k plus I believe is when it happens, but only when I'm quick on the gas though the gears. It will only grind from 1st to 2nd, but not 3rd to 2nd. I just installed a firewall adjuster about an hour ago, and have not had a chance to really get on it yet. Prior the pedal was catching close to the top about 3/4's from the floor, now I have it set to just under half distance from the floor, and I like how it grabs there better.

I have the exact same problem... Im pretty sure it is my syncros. If you try and shift fast at any rpm it will grind. If i try and shift at all at high rpm (into second only) it will grind. When Im shifting from a high rpm i have to hold my foot on the clutch until the revs totally drop, then shift. Even when I do that it still grinds.

i just had my t5 rebuilt because it started doing what yours is doing. the 1st and 2nd gear shift fork was wore and could not fully engage it into gear. eventually it wore completely out and could not get it into 1st or 2nd. needless to say 1st and 2nd gears wore trashed.

T5's are designed to use ATF not synchromesh. Synchromesh is used for tremecs. I would recomend filling it up with synthetic ATF and seeing if that helps at all. My guess though is that you synchros are going out.

ford says there should be 10lb of preload on the clutch cable for our cars... not sure why though. Probably to help eleviate some of the chirping of the throw out bearing.

This is news to me, I too would like to kmow how to establish this. Any literature I can look up? Thanks

 huh i always thought there should be a slight bit of play when the clutch is all the way out so there wasnt stress on the tob all the time?

I got a question. is it hard to rebuild a stock t5. my 2nd gear likes to grind mostly when im downshifting to take off again but also does mostly at slow speeds. and 3rd has been grinding when im shifting into it really quick. So is it hard to do a basic rebuild on a t5? im prettyy good with rebuilding things. ive rebuilt a transfer case and have some experience with a mazda truck 5 speed.

I asked the same question. I was hain a lot of chirping noise from my t/o bearing and I asked on the boards here and I was told that members of this board had called ford and asked them and their response was just that. I was shocked too because on all my other cars (65 ranchero, 68 camaro) I always left a little play so the clutch wouldnt wear out. I was a little leary of donig it but it seems to work fine. I dont smell the clutch burning and the noise is gone. When I put a new t/o bearing in I dont think I will do the same thing though. I will probably leave a little play in it. as for the literature .... I would search the threads and see if you can find it where I found it.

Everybody seems to think the rebuild of the t5 is fairly easy. There is a video that walks you through it and is a must for a first timer. That cam be bought at http://www.brothersperformance.com/shop/mustang/cartape5010.html amung many other places. You can also download a service manual at http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/media/pdfs_autogen/T-5_Service_Manual.pdf this will also walk you through it and it is free so you can take a look at it and see what you are getting yourself into.
