Transmission wont stay in first

I just bought a 95 mustang cobra and the transmission will not stay in first gear. As soon as I get on the gas I get a big clunk and it pops right out. No other gear does it and it does have a short thow shifter on it. Otherwise I love the car and it runs like a champ. Any ideas?

Someone else had this problem recently, I'm curious what the resolution was. Mine did it around 5-6 years ago with a $100 junkyard trans I put in it after annihilating my stocker, but I don't remember what the issue was. I believe it was something with a bad bearing causing excessive clearance? Does it grind any gears at all? Could possibly be from worn synchros causing the gears to wear on the edges of the teeth.

I've never understood first gear in T5's. I know they aren't synchronized.

Blocker rings are what holds the car in gear....that would be my first guess...

Before you start anything expensive, check the stops on your short throw shifter. I had a similar problem a few years ago and it turned out that my adjustable stop moved.

Yeah pull the leather boot and adjust the stops. Go for a drive and keep adjusting 'til it stays. The shifter is just probably and the very end where it jumps out of gear. When I install my BM ripper I had the same problem - trying to get it as close as possible before it jumps out of gear. Let us know the outcome. Peace.

I'll try and adjust the stops tommorrow. Thanks for the info. 1st is the only gear that does it and the rest of the trans is smooth and clean shifting. Its gotta be the shifter. It does it almost everytime. I start in second to avoid the embarassment of the load pop it makes when it flys out of gear.

Like said above, check your shifter stops, If that doesn't cure the problem. Worst case senario is that your shift interlock is worn out. When the interlocks go bad, it will pop out of gear. No problem though, the interlockers are right under the shifter base.

if it was the front stop on the shifter, it should give him trouble in 3rd and 5th as well. my guess would be something internal with the tranny.

Perhaps, but the above point about checking the shifter stops was to exhaust the free possibilities before trying the expensive stuff. That being said when my shifter stop caused my tranny to pop out of 1st, 3rd and 5th were fine. After my stops were adjusted the problem ceased.

Sorry about my above comment about the interlocks, the interlocks stop you from engaging two gears at once. What you want to do is pop off your shifter and look at the detents on the shift forks. They will wollow out over time and will cause the gear to pop out. So check that out. Again, its an easy fix.

I adjusted the stops on the shifter and it is still bad. Whats weird is if the trans is warmed up it does it alot less, when cold it won't stay in period. Today I also noticed that 3rd gear is making a whining sound that gets worse thoughout the gear. Haven't used 5th much yet. But 2nd, 4th, and reverse work great. I think I need a rebuild or upgrade.
