tread wear?!?!?!

i was wondering what the tread wear rating means. I have had my tires for about 4 months now and they are almost bald wtf. and i do not even burn them i have barded 2nd a few times taking off fast. but i do not just let them burn. what kinda tread wear should i look for so i am not buying tires every 6 months. or is this normal? i have fuzion ZRI 275.40.17's

The better tread wear score the harder compound rubber is used..That means less traction...Tires that give better traction usually are softer compound...

yea it does. So i should look for a higher number if i do not want them to burn as bad? or a lower number? i want some tires that are not going to be gone in 6 months. that is crazy man.

Look for a higher number if you want the tires to last longer under normal driving conditions. Softer compound is better for racing, gives you the traction you need, but they do wear out much faster, even under normal driving conditions.

A tire with a name like "fuzion" isn't going to last long anyways...Gotta stick with the bigger tire brands if you are going to want them to last...BFG, Goodyear, Michelin, Firestone, etc...

And rotating them every oil change is a good thing to help increase wear...

first of all man, no offense, but look at what tire you are using...what the hell man hahah, get some kdw bfg's and you will be all set, plain and simple, you get what you pay for

They were the tires that were on the thing when i got the car. They looked new when i got the car like they had just put them on there. You make it sound eash to shell out 1000 bucks for tires working 40 hours a week to pay for college. you peopel are made of money i wish i lived under the money tree. i am not complaing but come on now i asked a question do not jump my case telling me i am stupid for having the tires that came on the car when i bought it.

The tires for our cars are expensive, it's one of the things you have to live with when you buy a sports car. They have to have performance rated tires which usually cost more than cheaper passenger car tires.

BTW, I got my BFG's for $500 for all four mounted and balanced...

no prob man, Im in the same situation, I recommend the sumitomos, they make a really good all around performance tire, that last about as long as possible on a car like that. they are really cheap too, so if you dont wana fork over the cash for the bfg's, id go with sumitomo, i have heard nothing but good things and you can prob get 4 new ones for 500 or probably less. tire wear also has to do with how you drive your car and also making sure they are inflated properly and spun ballanced, yada yada yada haha, sorry to get on your case for tire selection, but they can make a huge difference!

I have about 800 to spend on tires. I would like to get something that will hold me to the road but will not be making me blow my christmas money on tires too lol. are drag radials a good idea? What about for everyday driving? i have a set of those on my 97 camaro.

i think its an easy call here, go with either bfg kdw's or sumitomos, both are under 800 and should last you a few years easy. its mainly how you drive it haha

You stand to be correct my friend. You can get a brand new set of bfg's for 500.00 all the way up to 630.00. I just had some put on my 01 cobra, last tuesday. Very nice tire, and you should get alot more mileage, going that route.

the tread wear on the pos ones that i have now is 320 with traction as A and temp. at A. what the heck does all this mean? Mean it is cheep? lol

The real deal

Have over 30 years in engineering with two major tire companies in design and building tires, and field engineering. Basically the tread wear index is picked by the company based on a government tire (they pick a mfg/type and it changes) and run it on a course. Problem is no one really knows how many miles say an index of 100 is for. It is all relative. Generally 100 is 10,000 miles. Therefore if your treadwear index is 160 then the mfg thinks it should run 16,000 miles (under normal conditions). Some mfg's give their tires high ratings for sale/marketing and others are conserative. Big fine if government checks their index and can not make mileage claim.

I just took off the BFG OE on my cobra (10K on the rear 20K on front) and put the same Fusion 275/40 on the cobra and my son did the same on his 450HP stang.You might say I have some insight into this tire. You have made an excellent choice especially in the ''bang for the buck"" theory. There are many trade offs, traction, braking, handling, treadwear, quiet, harshness etc. You have done Good.

The dude at the tire place said the Fuzion tires were better than the BFG's that he sells people. he said he had them on his 03 GT. i do not see the tires on my car lasting as long as they say they will (320 tread wear) No way.

Note that most drag radials tend to not have a very high treadwear rating. On the other end of the spectrum, you have "touring" tires, which will generally allow one to drive far more many miles...with all other variables remaining constant (ie - driving style).


In addition to proper wheel balancing, make sure your car has been properly aligned as well. Sometimes the suspension can be the culprit of poor tire wear (ie - from recent addition of shocks/strut/springs , pothole infested roads, or an accidental brush with a curb - LOL).

but i have to say that: you can't rotate performance tires, can you?

If they are directional and they are the same size in front and back you can only rotate them from front to back...if they aren't directional, such as say BFG KDWS's you can rotate them normally like you would on a regular passenger tire...but yeah, most performance tires are directional and you have to just put the fronts on the backs and the backs on the fronts of the same side of the car...

I get just over 30k on nitto 555's street tires (not drag radials). Reasonable price and it's the best tire I've had on the car so far.
