Trick flow head question

WHat do you guys think of the Trick FLow twisted wedge heads? I pretty much decided after weighing all options that I am going to keep the 302 thats in my car now and see what I can squeeze out of it. I have an oppertunity to buy a set of complete used trick flow's for $500. I was going to use them, along with my current X cam, step up to 30 pounders, new mass air sensor, and possible a turbo. Who makes a decent turbo kit for the 94-95 cars?

Trick flow Heads are awesome heads, I have 3 friends that have run TW Heads on there cars and saw awesome power gains. Currently everyone is all about AFR Heads and dont get me wrong, afr's are awesome heads but a bit pricy. TW Heads preform just as good as AFR if not better and if you can get a set for $500 then go for it, just keep in mind that u can get a brand new pair from mustangs unlimited for $995

Im buying a set of TW Heads myself this spring to go w/ my current set up.

I have TWs on my car, and I love them. They made a huge difference in the way the car performed... especially if you put in a cam that will take advantage of what the heads can do. I think a lot of people use too small of a cam, and don't appreciate the full potential of their heads. If your cam isn't enough, you may be able to use some 1.65 or 1.7 rockers to pep it up a bit. Check your clearance before you try that, unless you like valves in your oil pan.

$500 is a steal, but you may want to have machine shop check them out to make sure that they are not cracked before you dump the money on them.

With a few simple tools you can smooth out the air passages on the TFS heads pretty easilly to make them flow slightly better. You can also open up the exhaust ports a little to get the air out better. The aluminum heads are easy to work with, just don't get too crazy with them if you don't know what you are doing. There are several machine shops that have CNC programs setup to do the porting on the TW heads. If you want them to flow like AFRs you could always send them out and have a full port and polish done on them... but then again if you are going to do that, it will be cheaper to just buy AFRs.

Toby, I was told that the TFS Stage 1 cam is the biggest cam you can run with stock pistons and TW Heads. Is this true? I have some TW Heads and a Stage 1 Cam sitting in the gerage waiting to get money to install it. Hopefully I'll have it done before christmas break gets over. The cam was only an extra $50 so for that price I went with it instead of buying a new one.

If your buying used just make sure they are stud mount and not the old pedestal mount heads that they had trouble with and discontinued. Probably aren't but I have seen a few sets still floating around.

I think its a great choice as well. The nice thing about them is the larger valve sizes. They may be a bit much on a n/a 302, but down the road when you decide to go with more cubes you dont need to buy new heads cause the TW's can grow with the combo.

That price on the heads is unreal, if they are in good shape.. If you dont grab them ill take em!

Nope, not even close to being true. My cam is bigger than the mild tfs #1 cam and my heads are milled .020"..NO clearance issues

I agree with that. I am running an Anderson B3 cam which is fairly big, and I don't have any clearance issues either... although I think it is close! If you call TFS I think they can tell you the max cam that you can run with stock pistons. I am positive that I have seen people run the TFS stage 2 cams with them.

Just a word of warning if you buy them... since you are buying them used and will probably not have the installation manuals, they do not use the stock intake gaskets or stock spark plugs. Be sure that you look up the proper ones for the heads. I think the gaskets are FelPro 1250, and there are several choices for the plugs. If you are running Nitrous or a blower you will want to go a range colder. The Autolite Racing plugs are the best that I have found for my car. Also, you will need to get new pushrods to do the swap. I also changed my lifters while I was in there.

autolite 3924's and felpro 1250's is what i'm using.

I am using Autolite AR3923 plugs because I needed a range colder because of the blower and the extra timing that I am running.

I just bought mine used and all the info you need for gaskets and install and everything is on there website, you need to know if there o ringed, and if they are older heads, have the valve guides replaced due to a bad early design. All the head gasket part #'s, head bolts, dowel pins, spark plugs,everything you need for part #'s are on the site

oh yeah, and you need longer pushrods,I think 6.75?? the part # is there. on the site...
