It will murder your bottom end and mid range. The "R" is a high RPM burner that makes all it's power from like 4k to 4.5k and up. You already have a cobra intake.....that's perfect for your setup as is. A cam is a pretty much a waste to swap out on a mostly stock cobra engine IMO. Save the money for bolt ons or get the heads lightly ported and port matched to a ported lower intake. Just my 2 cents.

Thats a lie!

The GT40/GT40P 302's pick up some good power with a new cam. With the right package 260rwhp-280rwhp isnt out of the question.

And for intakes....the cam can make a difference. The TFS stage 1 isnt the difference maker lol. If you run a big intake on a 302 with smaller heads, you're gonna want a cam that helps to pull the air charge into the combustion chamber. This is where duration and overlap(i think) come into play. Thats why you see guys saying a holley systemax manifold is too big for some motors....but guys make good power with them when u have the right package.

And package is the key word, if you lose some below 3,000rpms, but the cam wakes up above that, then some guys will gear it accordingly. It depends on what you want and what you have to work with. Not every cam is created equal and u dont always have to have a cookie cutter combination like everyone else. This is why i like paying the professionals to pick their brain and to have someone with the knowledge to school me.

No problem, the cam needs to know what its working with....and a TFS stage 1 isnt expecting gt40 heads and a huge intake.

well its not a huge intake, i figured out its just a regular track heat.
and once i get out of the army and settled and get hired as a police officer ill go ahead and get some twisted wedge heads

it just kinda confuses me when some say that its not going to make much more power.

Honestly ... This statement is a bit open ended

If you will be ... more specific ... with what you expect

I'm sure the members will be able to help you to see if .......

Your expectations are realistic or ... way out there

Grady,

im not expecting to maximize the engines potential yet.i really just want a cool, fun, fast daily driver.

i get that the heads are hold it back some, but i just cant understand how an intake, with matching cam,is not going to give me any power.

in the future i will be swapping heads and but thats no time soon.
and hey if i like the power its making now i just might keep it as is.

but i would like to hear in more detail your thoughts about it.

Sure

I'd be happy to throw in my two cents worth here
and
That most likely is what it will be worth

I looked at the thread
and
I looked at the sig

I'm not clear what is on the car
and
What is waiting to go on the car

Tell us ... with detail ... what is NOW on the car

Tell us ... with detail ... what you got WAITING to go on the car

mac ceramic shorties
o/r h
mac cat-back
trickflow track heat upper/lower
trickflow stage1 cam

OK

I did the copy/paste thing so I could keep my head straight
with the info handy for me to see

I went over the entire thread again looking for an idea about what
your expectations or long term goals might be for your Stang

Here are the things that stand out or raise a red flag as I see it

1) Daily Driver ... can't get too carried away with mods
2) Cobra ... stick trans
3) Mid length runner intake
4) Shorty headers

Also ... I saw no mention of a power adder

Here is a Plan "A" and Plan "B"

Plan "A"

TFS 1 cam and Mid length runner intake work nice together

Shorty headers don't compliment the intake/cam too well
therefore
Long Tube headers would be better

Reason being is you will gain low/mid range with the LT's due to
their ability to scavange which shorty's just can't do

The gain from LT's is enough for me to tell you to give serious
consideration about them even though you now got the shorty
H mid pipe and shorty headers

Thing is ... You use the LT's to offset the lost low end of the
mid length runner ... Don't Ya See

Almost forgot ............

I'd dump the OEM Cobra intake as is
and
I'd certainly not go to the trouble/expense of porting it

Now ... I'm gonna say some stuff that might not be well received

I'd not be too focused on a meter and throttle body

I'm trying to steer you in the direction of gaining the most power
for the least buck spent

You will not gain much from a meter or tb or ... even both
and
I would hold off until you upgrade to better heads

Another thing ... Don't waste any cash on an ignition

With this stuff you would be at or around 280 rwhp
and
With Alum heads, meter, and tb upgrade around 300 rwhp
and
With a sharp tune you would have a nice low/mid range
and you would pull all the way to 6K or very close to it

Plan "B"

Build the combo around the GT40 heads
therefore
Be satisifed with 260-280 rwhp & strong low/mid range power band

Keep the OEM GT40 iron heads and OEM Cobra intake
Keep the shortys and shorty mid pipe

Now ... it needs to be said
Top end is gonna peter out a good bit before 6K with this stuff

Bottom Line is ..........

Its ALWAYS about application :Word:
and
That should be built around one's long term plans for the car

MOST IMPORTANTLY !!!

This is a daily driver ... so ... Plan "A" could be a bit over the top
cuz
You will have a good bit of cam lope and bad gas consumption

I wanna make sure you know this so I have to ask

Do you understand that TFS cam very likely will cause drivability issues
if you try and run it without a tune ???

Feel free to ask about anything I did not make clear

Good post Grady!!

Headers are very important when you change the intake..

Longtubes don't offer more power by giving better flow... They offer more power by pulling the exhaust out of the combustion chamber in harmony with the intake pulses..

Longtubes are DD friendly, and don't really have the issues of leaking like they did in the old days..

grady that was awesome... correct in every aspect. however, i pretty much went with plan a on my DD. its not tuned yet as i have a shot tranny, but let me be the first to say there are definitely drivability issues w/o a tune. the car wants to stall constantly, especially when it gets warm. I'm not running a TFS stage 1 cam, im running a anderson b31 cam. the car sounds amazing, but idles like a bag of dirt when hot. as for the LTs, i can certainly notice a difference especially since i went from completely stock everything to all this...

if you do it, do it right the first time so you're not double spending down the road... read, read read! its all i can say! do your research and go from there... make a plan of attack and do it that way. its basically what i did, and it took me about a year or so to finally make decisions....

good post grady.

ok

i had to read a couple times to take it all in.haha

i almost bought some long tubes too

but anyways.

i guess thats just one more thing to add to the list of things to get in the future.

and the guy who is installing the cam and intake said he will tune it and get it running good.

now i didnt really question how he was going to do this.he just told me he'll tune it before giving it back to me.
