hey guys i'm gettin a cam for my birthday this weekend..and i've had my eye on the trickflow stage one cam ,but need your help cuz i'm wondering will i be hurting my engines power or gaining??? Also has anyone ever had Piston/Valve clerance issues with this cam on an otherwise stock engine.By the way i'm getting my heads ported this summer.S o just tell me wut u think >thanx bros. :flag:
 
With just the cam I don't think you will gain all that much without getting some better heads. The car no doubt will sound really mean though but your intake and heads will bottleneck your engine.

I wouldn't install the cam until you have the heads/springs done. It won't perform any better, and you don't want to take a chance on floating the valves. In any event, you have an even bigger bottle neck to performance upstream - and that's the stock intake manifold. It's going to REALLY restrict anything you do with the heads and cam. You need to either replace it or have tmoss port the lower. If I were in your shoes I'd skip the cam and focus on the intake and heads. Without the intake work - you're wasting your money on the heads and cam.
 
the thing is my dad said he would get me a cam for my birthday.And i know if i tried for the intake he wouldn't go for that , But i have a guy at my church who knows wut he's doin with porting at an affordable price.As far as the intake How much whould T-Moss port it for > Would porting my lower intake show a significant gain as would something like performer RPM or gt-40. Thanx guys
 
Understand 89lxvert - so take the cam and say thank you. Just don't install it til you have the matching pieces to go with it. Especially in a heavy vert - you're gonna lose bottom end torque, and loss of bottom end is especially noticeable in a heavier car. Tom can tell you about his porting job - it won't flow quite what a gt40 will, but it will be close; and it should match up nicely with the ported heads. But it's critical to solve the manifold piece first -- if the flow can't get through the stock manifold, the heads and cam won't do you any good - because your restriction is UPSTREAM of the heads. You see?

well, for prolly around the same price you can go to the junk yard and find an explorer or cobra. from the explorer (it has to be a 97 or up 5.0) grab the intake, its basically a gt-40 intake. and if not the explorer try and look for a cobra. if you find the cobra you can take the intake and also the cobras come w/ 24# injectors (the explorer may too, but im not sure).
 
Having tmoss port your lower is likely to cost much less than the Explorer/Cobra intake as most of the junkyards know what they have. Also, the Explorer intake may not work for you if you have emissions inspections to deal with - the later (97.5+) Explorers with the P heads have no provisions for egr.
 
The 95-early 97 Explorer intakes have the internal EGR passages like the stock 5.0 intake and can be converted for use on a Fox pretty easy. They come with 19# injectors (orange body), but they are the Bosch Design III disc style injectors that flow more than the stock OEM Stang Bosch DesignII pintel injectors. I run the Explorer injectors on my car. The early Explorer intakes are harder to find and they will run $250+ with throttle body and injectors unless you get real lucky.
 
Best of both worlds- get an Exploder intake, and then have Tmoss port it! It's a great intake, and it's cheap. As far as the cam, I almost got that one, but went with the E cam instead. I think they're similar, but my mechanic who was building the motor perferred FRPP parts.
 
I have a tfs 1 cam and love it, I also have the tmoss intake and they work realy well together, I have gt40 heads though. I would agree that you should wait to put it together until you have everything if not for the sake of only having to buy one set of gaskets.

In my heavy sn95 I noticed little trq drop off down low but at 2,200-2,500 it takes off til redline.

BTW the intake specs are .499 and exh. is .512 for who said they were both .512. and valve springs would be a very wise thing to change.
 
I have that cam, I did notice a loss in bottom end but a big gain up top. I done the Heads/Cam/Intake/Headers/Mass Air Meter/Injectors/Throttle Body/Smog Del./AC Del. all at the same time, so I can't say how much the cam is to blame or the loss of bottom end. My setup kicks in hard at about 3200RPM. With a stock style long runner intake you might not lose as much low end as I did, but these guys are right get the heads and intake taken care of.

If you're on a budget your can get the TMOSS ported lower and a set of Thumper heads. I have no experience with them but I've heard good things. Then again maybe your local performance machine shop can do the same work as Thumper for cheaper.

And to whoever was talking about the Stage 1 being .512 on both sides, it's actually [Gross valve lift: .499 in. intake/.510 in. exhaust]

With the 58cc AFR's, 1.6 Rockers, and the Stage1, I had 4 thousandths to spare on the intake valve to piston clearance.
 
I've had both the E cam and, now, a custom cam in mine. The custom was designed to bring back the bottom end, without losing too much to the E up top. We picked up anywhere from 45-90 ft-lbs of torque over the range from idle to about 3000 rpm - so the loss of power down low with that particular cam can be quite significant. Not an issue for a racer that spends all it's time between 4000-6000. A big issue for a daily/street driver that spends almost all it's time between idle and 3000.
