do any of you guys know of anything a guy can do to aid in his chances of successfully passing an emissions test. i think i should pass, but i am a little worried. i know i should fill up with 93 octane gas, but should i throw in an octane booster too? what can i add to the fuel to help me pass? can i do anything to help my odds? thanks guys!

drive the car hard and let it get good and hot....get to the shop on time for your test and let it idle till you bring it in...a hot engine should run leaner than a cold engine.

You'll want a lower octane fuel. Higher octane is less volatile (more resistant to knock) and can increase emissions.

Ensure your EGR is up to par or you can almost kiss the test good-bye right there.

As Roland said, definitely have the car up to temp and then some (I like to have coolant temps at 200*F if I can).

Good luck.

Running a can of Seafoam an hour or so before the test can help too, I've heard.

I have to go get smogged sometime this week too, so out went my 160* thermostat and in went the 195*. I'm thinking I might also do the acetone thing too, I'm going to have to do some more research on it though.

Wonder what the theory behind that is? Considering Seafoam will create a huge "unleasing" of pollution for quite some time... even after the smoke has cleared.

just run a few ounces of acetone and slightly unbolt your exhaust... read this http://jason.fletcher.net/tech/sniffer/sniffer.htm

I read down to category II on that site and got pissed.

That info is for a carbed car, and may or may not work for EFI.

If you need to pass emissions, then the first thing you should do is make sure the emissions equipment is working properly.
Install fresh cats if you don't have any. $150 at Summit will get 2 high flow MAGNAFlows that will not cost you ANY hp.
Make sure the EGR is working properly.
Pull the codes to make sure there are no other problems that need to be addressed.

This should get most of our Mustangs to pass emissions.
Notice there are no 'TRICKS' being mentioned.

If you still can't pass after doing this, then you need to consider why you didn't pass.
Did you make some 'modifications' that will hurt your emissions results?
A HUGE cam?

Some things to keep in mind from the above link...
Introducing an exhaust leak before the O2 sensor in an effort to increase the 'fresh' air in the exhaust, will make your HC levels HIGHER. This is because the O2 sensor will be seeing an excessively lean condition and the computer will attempt to correct by adding more fuel.

The above link also mentioned removing the pcv in order to eliminate crankcase fumes from the exhaust. You shouldn't have crankcase gasses getting into the exhaust anyway. I don't understand that comment.
If the pcv system is working properly, it won't cause any issues.

My entire point is pretty simple.
You don't need any tricks to pass emissions.

All you need to do is get the car in good working order, and make sure the emissions systems are functioning properly.

Unless you have some wild combo, you should be able to pass.

Instead of seeing emissions testing as some bogus BS rule being imposed upon you
Look at it as an opportunity to see how well your car is actually running.
If it is running well, you should pass, at least the sniffer portion.

Set your timing back to 10* if it is higher. I failed emissions, went home and retarded my timing, and went back and passed.

I tried this stuff called "Guaranteed To Pass", worked like it said it would. Although the car still failed for the breather and disconnected pcv

dont listen to these clowns, take $5.00, go to an auto parts store, buy 4 non foul spark plug adapters , take 2 of these four and drillthe ceners out to the size of the probe on your o2 sensors , screw the other two on the bottoms of these two that you just drilled, screwin your downstream o2's into these screw whole assembly back into your exhaust , emmisions passed, problem solved, if your obd1, then just do the 2 tha are there . word to the wise, if your boosted, have the non foulers ready with a 7/8" wrench handy and install them somewhere close by and remove them shortly after because their going to throw your tune waaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy conservative and lean . this is known as lying to the computer and works like a charm. glad i could help

UHHHH, What???

I thought this post was a joke until I got half way through and realized you were serious

By all means, please elaborate.

I am having trouble visualizing what you are describing, so pics or diagrams would be great.

Understand that I am going to be skeptical. So when I respond, be prepared.

Also, please be respectful in your future posts; most of us passed 5th Grade and in doing so, don't frivolously call people names.

Now, please do explain your idea.

Pretty good suggestions for the most part. I agree with running motor at normal operating temp (providing you have stock 195 stat installed), running with cats, running with full emmision equipment, and checking to see if you have any emmission error codes (check engine light codes). If you find any codes with a Ford scanner you can repair the problem which in turn will help keep car burning cleaner and of course running better.

As for Guaranteed to Pass stuff, ive seen this stuff in walmart. I also have heard good reports from others so i think its worth a shot. A properly running 5.0 in org. spec will pass emmisions anyday.
