Trouble getting inspected

Well it is that time of year again. Time for me to spend days searching for a place where I can successfully get a new Texas State Inspection Sticker. I wouldn't think that not having the stock air cleaner makes that much of a difference but most inspection places want the stock air cleaner on there. Of course that is not possible since I managed to lose my original air cleaner when I moved to Lubbock. Do any of you guys have a problem with something like this? Is there anything I can do about it?

Just buy a new air cleaner. I would never run an engine with out one in the first place and beeing that your in lubbock thats the worst place in the world when it comes to dirt storms.

This is the main reason I have my oil changed on my 3 daily drivers at the local oil/lube/inspection station instaed of doing it myself. When it's time for my Granada or my son's car inspection, little things get overlooked. Homemade lens for tailights, no belt on air pump etc. Never a problem with the stangs...they don't even go into the station, they just lay a rag on the dash, scrape off the old sticker and put on the new and I'm outta there.

Maybe you could borrow a similar stock cleaner from a buddy for inspection day.

Hee Hee, You think I'd drive my stang in dust city and not have an air cleaner on it. That's funny!! I wouldn't even make it down my alley.

Having picked many strange things out of my engine compartment, an air cleaner is a must for me. I've had mice buid a nest on my intake, I've found dead birds, weed seeds, gravel, sand, etc. all of which would have gone down the venturi were it not for the air cleaner.

I still have not taken care of this and my sticker expired in January. I know I'm a terrible person for driving an uninspected car on the Texas highways and byways, but hey cut me a little slack I haven't drivin it since June 6. Thats when I started in on my wiring harness install. I'm almost through with that, finally! Anyway, you guys got any input to give on the inspection thing?

Just go out to a wrecking yard and find one on a old ford of anykind. All the V8's with a carb will fit. Then rig from there.

My state doesn't have an inspection program. Basically, if it rolls, you can get it licensed. I don't agree with it because there are many new southern immigrants (politically correct) that probably have to drag there feet Flintstone style, to stop the car and they don't have insurance. Some cities along the front range do require smog compliance because of their poor air quality. Original air cleaners are expensive to buy. Salvage yard is your best bet.

I don't know about that. I know they have the stupidest cops. I'm in Colorado.

How the heck do these folks know a stock air cleaner from a non stock air cleaner anyway? Are they all Ford guys? Just what do you have on it? My god, just had my car done on yesterday. He knows I pre-inspect bulbs and horn before I bring it anyway (not to mention that it only saw 1200 miles since last year) but they just through the sticker on it. I would keep trying other places. I did live in Flower Mound for over a year a while back, and I took it to the oil lube place on 2499 that was reccomended to me by Tang350. They inspected lights, brakes, horn and wipers then gave me a sticker, it was fairly simple, my back up lights didn't even work, lol, I think that is more important than a non stock air cleaner for pete's sake. Heck, they shouldn't even be looking under the hood.

I would guess he has a round chrome air cleaner on it. Didnt we all do that years ago.....

Yep 13 or 14 inch round crome air cleaner from autozone. I don't know how those guys know anything about what to look for on my old stang. I guess the state must be trying to crack down on people modifing their cars because my two roomates added the cone shaped K&N filters to their cars, 89 Firebird and a 86 Buick GN, and they also were not passed by a number of places. That's the only reason why I could think of for our cars not passing simply because we had on different air cleaners/filters. I stuck a ford decal on my air cleaner, so maybe it will be easier for me to pull a fast one on the guys at the inspection place. Oh and my backup lights haven't worked in like 5 years. They never said anything about that. Go figure.

Wow, what idiots. The aftermarket air unit might even be more efficient and you could get stock chrome in the early 60's on a hipo, so I don't see the big deal. Is lubbock anywhere near FM? If so, I would go where I said. Texas Autozone should not sell anything that is not state legal then, I'd even consdier asking them and point out yours and your friends case. They might say something like: "BS!!!!! But tell y'all what, heres my uncles card, he has a station and will give ya a sticker". Ya never know, sometimes just talking to someone (just like in here) gets you an inside deal.

move to florida, i can run strait headers with no emissions controll, the only thing is the cops who probably wouldnt like that very much due to the amount of car alarms going off

I don't think that's it either because the line to the charcoal canister has been gone for probable 10 years and I've never had anyone say a thing about that. They have complained about the heat tube that runs from the exhaust manifold to the carb/air cleaner. Well really they haven't done that either since I switched to aftermarket headers. I don't know what the deal is since there really wasn't any smog stuff originally on my car for them to get bent out of shape about anyway. I think the squirrels probable put them up to hassling me.

Gee whiz you shoot at one squirrel with a pelet gun and all of a sudden they all have it in for you.

Heck, bring it down to Orange. I've got an aftermarket aircleaner on
my 66, never had a problem getting it inspected. Sounds like that
inspection station is being anal. I know that if the vehicle is over
25 years old, that it's supposed to be exempted from the pollution
control standards. Have you tried another shop in town or another town?
