Trunk Lid Woes

The trunk lid is off a vert. It did not line up properly when I bought the car, but that was not a big deal, or so I thought.

Hum...I thought convertible hinges and coupe hinges were different. Let me get a convertible owner in here for an opinion.

The convertible lids can be put on a coupe. The area for the hinges is on both of them. My fiberglass factory ultralight trunk lid also can be bolted on a coupe. Holes drilled for convertible hinges just need to be filled.

I tried my vert trunk lid on Dusty and it lined up. Just didn't like the ultralight wing on a notch back.

Yeah, the lid is the same. For the vert they used a coupe lid and drilled holes for the hinge which mounts on the outside top on a vert. I currently have a coupe lid on my vert to do away with the luggage rack which. I hated. The hinges are way different between a coupe and vert, but the lid is the same.

No, not so much. You really don't won't to take the tempering out of any hinge.

Tomorrow I use the BFH on the hinges. I have a soft faced 2 1/2 pound no bounce I think will do the trick. I'm going to brace the bottom of the hinge using some extra wood so it doesn't bend at the body. I appreciate all the advice. I'm using nylon cable ties to keep the torsion rods from poking my eye out. I probably wouldn't have thought about that until it was too late

Worked on the trunk alignment a good part of the day. I'm just glad I don't do this for a living; I'd be starving and po'd. I'm okay with the results. I bent both hinges, several times actually. There's a lot of "spring" in the way these are mounted. At least it now has a gap on both sides and they're sort of even. The only thing is, I could not get the edge by the taillight to go down even with the body; it sticks up just a bit. There's really no adjustment, as it more or less just pivots on that rearmost bolt. The forward bolt (closest to the rear window) does adjust up and down quite a bit, but not the rearmost bolt. Here's how I left it. Thanks again for all those who helped

To be honest, the tolerances on these cars were crap from the factory. You are about as close as you can get. I'd put money on the frame being slightly out of whack as well.

There might be a little twist left that you can take out by placing a 2x4 on the other side and lightly pushing down on the area that's too high. You don't want to use lots of pressure. Push a little, check it, push a little more if you need, check it, etc....

I'll have to give that a try tomorrow when my son comes over. The trunk lid actually looks pretty good, so whoever did the work on it knew what they were doing. They may not have had much to work with. I'm sanding every inch of the car, as there are repairs that were not made so well. Getting the windshield out was a bear, as someone put some type of sealant that was hard as a brick.
