I put my 1970 on jack stands the other day, and was dead-set on replacing the oil pan. I had all of the bolts off of it, and was trying to remove it, when I realized it was impossible with the lower crossmember in place. I could have sworn that I had removed the oil pan about 6 years ago to put a new gasket on it, and don't remember that crossmember being there, but I'm sure it was. Is it possible, or even safe, to unbolt one side of the crossmember to remove the oilpan, or not? Will it undermine the structural integrity of the car? Will I have to wait until the engine gets pulled from the car to get my nice, clean, dent-free oilpan on there??

Thx,
~5B

You need to pull the X-member to pull the pan. It will not hurt anything, as long as you don't drive it with it off. Be warned that the two bolts that hold that x-member can be a pain to get out. My friend busted the bolt in his 65 trying to get it out and had to drill it out.

Do yourself a favor.....when you get the crossmember out, clean the bolts real good on a wire wheel and then coat them with antisieze before re-installing them so you won't ever have to worry about them again.
