I looked at the archives first, couldn't find anything specific to my question:

I've got the driveline from a 91LX in my 67. PO had it custom-tuned with an older style chip (not Diablo or SCT). I'm basically running the same setup, with the exceptions noted below:

  • 5.0 stroked to 347
  • TF heads, 2.02 intake valves
  • TF Street heat intake
  • 75mm throttle body (was 70mm when tuned)
  • 30# injectors (was 24# when tuned)
  • 76mm MAF
  • F303 cam
I'm looking for a conservative tune, something that is very streetable. Are the changes since the car was tuned before significant enough to warrant a new tune, or should I take a shot at running it as-is?

If I'm going to need to tune it, what setup should I use? I'm not wanting to become a guru on tuning this motor, I want set and forget. Money is an object, but I want a reliable setup. The only shop I know in the area is Power By the Hour--they won't even look at the car unless I go Megasquirt.

I'd appreciate your suggestions, and the reasoning behind them.

Thanks!
Greg

When I bought my car it was a 302 with gt40 heads, cobra intake and tfs 1 cam. It was tuned by Tony Gunyon with a Diablo chip.

I did a rebuild consisting of a 331 stroker kit, AFM N41 cam and Edelbrock intake. Ton told me no way on reusing the tune. He also said that changing cubic inches like that makes it extremely difficult to mail-order a tune, he wouldn't do it.

I checked around with a few other tuners too, and they all agreed that changing the displacement was a big deal.

Sorry, I should have been a little clearer: The time that is on the car was done when the engine was already stroked. Only changes since tune are the ones listed above.

I still think that the changes you've made are significant since the orig tune. You will have to have tuning alterations to accommodate them accordingly. As for where, and how to best get that done, I just wasting bandwidth, cause I don't know.

A good compromise according to many is the Quarterhorse/Binary Editor combo from Moates.com(.net?). It is a piggyback of sorts that allows custom tuning, is cheap to buy, and has a good amount of support and data from the 5.0 crowd. It's what I bought and will be installing when I fire up my car.

Total cost for the BE and QH was around $420 when I bought them last year. You'll need to borrow/buy a wideband along with this setup if you don't have it already. You don't need to keep them in the car, but you need them for tuning if you're doing it yourself or with a buddy.
