I've never tuned a car before, seeing as this is my first Mustang and I've only had trucks/suv's before. I plan on getting a Ram Air hood and a SCT tuner and I wondered if that was going to be hard to tune since you obviously won't be getting any Ram Air on a dyno or at idle. Or is Ram Air pretty much negligible in a tune?

Ram air provides 1 or 2 HP at most. Tuning is not required for ram air, so you can leave that out of your equation.
Well the Ram Air duct will be ran to the CAI box. If you have cooler air going into the CAI you'd think it'd be a little more than 1-2 HP wouldn't you?

Only a few hp at WOT, 1-2hp sounds about right. Casey4 knows first hand by experience.

I do trust DarkFireGT as he has answered some questions before for me. However, as some of you have stated on here that a CAI will give you somewhere between 20-30 hp with a tune. That is with your CAI pulling warm air from your engine compartment. If you have a cooler air from the Ram Air system going into your CAI box, I don't see how that wouldn't be more significant than 1-2 HP.

what ram air kit do you plan on using? there are many choices available, and some slight modification may be required for use with a CAI, but it is not impossible.
also, if you really want to tune for the ram air, you would have to data log while driving and compare the results to a dyno session.
In optimal conditions, maybe 5 HP at the most. Average is 1-2. I've seen a dyno done. Sorry, no link to the results. It was several years ago.
I believe you.. I just figured bringing cooler air into the CAI box would make more HP.

actually i believe you have to keep the factory air box location, not the factory airbox itself. there are some CAI's that reroute the factory location (not many but a few) if you supercharge it, the ram air wont work. if you go with the CAI that relocates it to on top of the grille, same deal, wont work.
IMO if you are going to get the hood, make it work
nothing worse than the facory fake scoop ford put on the 99-04's. again my opinion

A cai/tune makes most of its power from the the tune around 80%. the cai makes power mainly beacuse its less restrictive, bigger tubing, and has a highflow filter. The air being slightly cooler, or"ram air" is good for a couple hp tops.

If you have a ram air hood and get it tuned you won't have to worry about the tune later. One reason is the hood is open while the car's being tuned and it's pulling ambient air in, not the hot air that's under a closed hood.

So the true difference between the factory located CAI and a ram air system will be in the real world when the hoods are closed and not on the dyno. Thus making it much more difficult to test for. Once I get the '08 Bullitt grill, my ram air setup should be a bit more effective as I will be elimintaing the fogs in front of each of the side inlet holes
