Turbo 4 cylinder vs a stock 5.0

It all depends on how you want it to "run". My dad has a stock SVO and it would easily handle a stock 5.0 on a curvy road. In a straight line is a different story. And as already stated, its getting harder to find a stock 5.0

I have a 2.3 turbo in my 93lx. I run it at 21lbs of boost with ported intake, head, and manifold with 3" exhaust and I have handed it to plenty of bolt on 5.0's. H/C/I are a different story though. There are plenty that you can do to the 2.3t's to make them fast. Several are running low 12's and high 11's with a bigger turbo. If you want to see some of the combos, go to TurboFord.net Home. There is a thread on proven combinations. It is a great little motor, but it is very finicky.

Stock for stock, not much comparison as the 5.0 will rape the 2.3 out of the hole. BUT, get yourself a manual boost controller and turn the boost up to about 17psi and it's a different story. My Merkur will slaughter a stock 5.0 once it gets moving. It's still a slug off the line but once it gets to about 3k RPM it snaps. On the highway it wouldn't even be a challenge....it'll go 65-100 almost instantly and i don't even have to downshift. All i've done to it is put a K+N on it, a small notebook sized Saab intercooler (most ghetto IC install ever) and set the boost at 17psi. It even has a 2 inch exhaust all the way back...i can't wait to get a 3'' exhaust and a ported head and intake.

Thanks guys....I am thinking on buying one that is why I asked. Oh and yes I own a bone stock 5.0. I actually prefer mine that way.

Thanks for those links :D

Only thing I fear is I will miss the sound and torque

You WILL. Trust me. There is NO comparison between even a stock 5.0 and a mildly modded 2.3. Granted, boost is a whole different drug and it comes with its own grin inducing perks. The 2.3 is a great engine when outfitted right and can be a ton of fun, but there's a reason so many people drive 5.0s and not 2.3s.

Still, if you port and gut the intake, port the head and exhaust manifold (or just get a tubuler or log style manifold), get a nice 3 inch exhaust, throw in a decent Ebay intercooler, get a Gilis boostvalve and an adjustable fuel pressure gauge to make sure you have lots of fuel (might wanna just get a 225lph pump while you're at it) and up the boost to about 20psi and you'll have one seriously pissed off 4 banger that'll hang with just about anything in stock trim and will really shock the hell out of some of the faster cars out there. If you really put some cash in it so you can spin it to higher RPMs, then it really gets fun...but by then with the same amount of cash you'll probably still be going faster in the 5.0 with mods.

Hell just build a junkyard twin turbo setup on the 5.0 and get the best of both worlds :hail2:

I ran into to a guy a couple years ago at Ford Nationals in Brandenton, Florida. He was in the car show with an SVO. I don't know the PSI or what year it was. The guy had a built 4 cylinder motor with 580 rwhp. Crazy amount and the car was clean.

My 4 banger car made 197 rwhp and 290 rwtorque. It made that torque number at 3600 rpm too!!. It also ran 13.84 @102 with a slipping clutch.
Anyway its just a stock 88 turbo coupe engine with a GN intercooler running 18 psi and has been this way for 5 years and over 80k miles. So yes you can make a 4 banger outrun a stock 5.0 and then some doing very little.
