TURBO QUESTION

i wanted to know if those turbo timmers really work to help extend the life of the turbo? i was told that they allow the vehical to run for a few minutes so that the oil can run threw the turbo and cool it down??? is this all true ? so what do they cost ? if the person that told me this is blowing smoke up and out there ass then sorry for wasting youre time but thank's! if in fact they are then how do i extend the life of a turbo or is there a way to ? aw music to our ears peace

i thought that if the hot oil sits it can wear away at the walls or something. with the turbo timer i thought it just counts down to a set amount of time and lets the oil cool down thats in the turbo trying to cool it. haha im prob way off.

The number one cause of turbo failure is oil "coking". Oil "coking" occurs when a turbocharger is not properly cooled down and the oil that normally lubricates the center cartridge heats up and forms solidified oil deposits. A turbo timer allows an engine to idle for a preset time after the ignition key has been turned to the off position and removed

From what I have always heard, the turbo timers work very well and are a great mod for a turbo car. I plan on doing one on my 'scort at some point. Cheap insurance! As far as pricing, not positive, but try Hosepower Freaks.....I am sure I saw one there at the last Dyno session we were at.

Waste of money unless you're too lazy to sit in the car a minute after a hard run or coming off the freeway before shutting the engine off.

Oil coking is the danger, but, the cooldown is only necessary if your were at freeway speeds or more, or running it hard right before you get where you're going. I don't bother cooling off mine after my drive to work since I'm just cruising through town at ~30mph for the last 3 minutes before pulling into the parking lot.

Also, synthetic oil does not "coke" and therefore does not require as much of a cool down period, more of a period of time to allow the turbo to stop spinning while there's still oil pressure.

i personally think turbo timers are a ricer mod. its a timer. big deal, i could use my cd player and listen to a 2 minute song and itd have the same effect. nothing magic about it just my opinion though

yeah but if u dont want to sit there and let it cool then its a good buy, its all about personal preference, i have a friend who has one and he loves it. so its all about u and what ya want. just my .02

Also, some factory turbo cars have electric pumps and water cooling to bring the temperature of the turbo down quickly after the engine is turned off.

My thought would be do you really want the mustang that you spent all the $$ to turbocharge sitting idling while you are not there? What's the point of having the timer if you are going to stay with the car? Just my $.02

I personally dont feel like sitting in my car for a few minutes everytime I drive the car and shut it off. Ive had a turbo timer on every turbo car Ive had (3 total) and will continue to use them for the simple benifits.

Also though, now most turbo timers have different functions that do different things. Alot have timers to see your acceleration to a given speed, or time to brake. Also some have built in boost guages. I use mine to watch actual batt voltage.

Depending on altitude and condition, options, driver..ect..But around a 14.9-15.5. Really it depends on alot on how good the driver is and the clutch in how hard it can be launch. A stock clutch is really pushing it to pull a 1.9 60, the 1st gens seem to have a stronger clutch factory. At least mine did.

Right now on pump gas I trapped 105, but had a fist full of issues. Im about to get all them ironed out and I should be trapping around 115 after the cams and methanol injection are done.

Yeah, that is true but it shouldn't just run for a few seconds. Ever gone out and really pushed a turbo car then looked at the turbo? It's not uncommon to see the turbo glowing red hot. This is your problem. That doesn't just cool down in 10 seconds of letting the car idle, it takes a while. You want to let it run for say two minutes, which is annoying if you are just running down to 7-11, or you just are in a hurry. Nothing wrong with a turbo-timer. If I had a turbo car again that I knew ran hot, I'd buy one. Even if your just puttering down the street at 2500rpms in first or second, your turbo is a lot hotter than you would think. Saying a turbo timer is a "ricer-mod" is like saying flushing your brakes every 50k miles is a "ricer-mod". I hardly consider either much of a mod, but definitly is a good idea if you want the car to last.

Its not to hard to consider a Turbo timer a Ricer mod if you also consider a Turbo a Ricer mod too

Seriously, it boils down to wether:
A) you dont mind sitting and waiting for the thing to cool down each time as necessary
B) You spend the money on the Turbo timer, cause thats what its for

or

C) you dont bother with any of it at all and cook your turbo

true to all of this. i dont mind waiting for it to cool down but then after all the car has 146k on it so i'm sure the previous owners never let it idol.what about turning up the boost on the stock turbo? is it possible? peace

Oh heck yea! its as easy as slitting the wastegate hose lol. Dont really do that....
Depending on what kind of setup it is, you will probably have a hose running from the outlet side of the turbo to the wastegate servo or whatever they want to call it. When the pressure gets to a certain (usually preset) psi it blows off the wastegate. If you bleed off some of that psi it will boost further. Caution...very easy to go too far! Read up on what the motor can take, and go a few psi lower Its a simple mod, but can damage the motor. Ask Jeff (AFP) what happens when you loose the wastegate all together Time for a head gasket!
