Turbos Legal?

whell, after i just blew my headgasket last night, i was thinking of re-mounting my turbos up front. For a number of reasons, most being That my airfilters are sucking in water in the rain, and ground clearance, the faster spool wont be bad eaither. Anyway, i was told that my current setup would be legal or MASS inspection as long as I installed my stock h-pipe.

My question is this: If i front mounted my turbos, and made the downpipes connect to my stock 4-cat h-pipe, then through the normal exhaust system, would this be legal...assuming it actually passes emmissions? After i would switch it to my x-pipe.

Thanks guys, just looking for a bit of info before i start chopping.

OT: you blew another hg? what happened this time?

Back on topic: so long as the sniffer doesn't complian, i would think it'd be legal. MD uses the sniffer only. they don't even open the hood or check anything.

i wouldn't think they care what you have under there as long as it passes emisions...

I dont know much about inspections but dont some places have visual and the sniffer?

Kyle, here are my thoughts

The smart thing to do would be talk to a few emissions places in your local area.

With some of the kits you see, the O2's are moved farther down stream and that can fail you with a visual and it can cause them to be too cool.

Since you would be using the stock mid pipe, the O2's would be in their original location. That would go a long way with helping it to burn clean like it should as long as the rest of the tune is close.

I don't know about your state, but some state laws require you to maintain all stock exhaust and emissions components. So you can't delete anything and stay legal in those states (Michigan for example). Those kind of rules probably run in addition to any emissions testing.

The short answer is that your best bet is to ask a shop in your area that might know the local laws.

whell, the way i look at it, im not actually deleting emissions equipment....everything will be stock emissions wise.....just adding some turbos.

my tune was still a little lean, i had got a new maf and still needed to have my chip re-burnt.....its ok though, im getting good at it now lol

That's what I think it should be, but MA has essentially CA emissions thanks to one of the agreements to get federal money for the Big Dig.

I was even mildly concerned that the inspection guy would take issue with my Fox TB setup and Edelbrock intake, but it went fine.

:OT: Funny how that big dig went isn't it? I was driving around boston last night in the F150, absolutely miserable.

Anyway, I doubt they are legal. In Massachusetts, you can't legally have long tube headers, even if you pass emissions with them. They are considered a race only part, and not legal for street use.

I would think that twin turbos might also be considered a race part. You can't modify you're exhaust EXCEPT for cat backs. Those are California legal, at least my flowmaster catback is.

Just an idea, in Ohio if you have receipts for more than 5,000 in upgrades, not repairs, and have a registered daily driver in your name you can get collectors plates an dont have to pass emissions test. I dont know if you can get collector plates in MA but its somthin to look into.

MA has "antique" plates, if you're 25+ years old (technically you have to have all of the OEM emissions stuff installed).

I think the only plate choices in MA are: Passenger, Commercial, Antique, Farm, Dealer, and Repair (not including the official plates for police cars and such).

I talked to one of my buddies tonight who used to do inspections stickers until about a year ago, and he said as long as it can pass safety and the sniffer for emissions you should have no problem getting a sticker in MA.

You guys are lucky. Last smog test here in Cali they wouldn't even let me have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Sniffer was fine but failed visual miserably

Not sure how it is in cali, but in MA you just get to know someone who does them, or pay a little extra and you can usually get a sticker on just about anything as long as it isnt really bad or dangerous.
