Thats the way turbo supras come stock, its called sequential turbocharging. Its not a good idea for your mustang though. All the big hp supras you see are all single turbos, the smaller turbo seems to turn into a liability.
A single kit should perform just as well as twins, its just a matter of personal prefrence. I like twins because of their larger efficency range, I can run low boost with no surge on the street yet they flow enough to support 1000hp.

my buddy had a home made quad turbo kit on his triton v-10 superduty, if i remember corrrectly he had smaller turbos feeding two bigger turbos. so essentially two sequential systems. The torque curve had to have been as flat as montana. Needless to say the motor only lasted about three weeks.
