Two Things.

I have owned a 1998, 2003 and the 2005. All of which were excellent vehicles with great potential. On a personal note, I prefer the S197 over the 2 others I have owned. So, if you end out with this platform you will enjoy it, I assure you.

As for the bolt-ons, it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish with the modification. Please pose a specific modification you are considering, on which engine (V-6 or V-8) and we will respond. The comment/question you posed is as broad as you can get in the world of Mustang modification.

I know how you feel about wanting to be the fastest thing on the street, but keep in mind, no matter how much you spend to make your car faster, there will always be someone faster than you.

As far as bolt on's though, there are quite a few good bolt on's that are easy to install your self, plus they make the car much more fun to drive. Some of the first things you should look at are a CAI+tune, gears, and exhaust (for sound, not performance). Do a search on this site for each of those for opinions on the different products out there, you'll get a lot of hits.

I don't know about you knowledge base but the FIRST mustang was a 6, but I guess that defeats the purpose of having a stang. ...... :Zip2:

Since you don't own a S197 or drive yet I'll cut you some slack!

Dont take the V-6 lightly, you would be pretty damn impressed.
As for taking anything else on the road? I absoultely spanked a Hemi Charger today. The day before I had a Soccer Mom in a Caravan, I missed third and hit fifth, well' I had to do the "ricer blowby" to regain some form of diginity again.
I have found that it is 10% HP and 90% driver, when we are talking light to light. Anyone can build up speed and blow by unexpected in the left lane on the interstate(ricers).

I take no offense at your comment concerning the V-6 Stallion. But I would like to clarify a couple things and help develop a relationship here in a good starting point. I tend to write novels. The fellas know it and most are used to it. Please take a moment to read this and consider what I am saying. I am not being a smart-butt or trying to be rude or poke fun at your opinion or what you have said. With this said……….

I accept your opinion. However, the way you deliver an opinion in forums is the starting point of building relationships that get you the help and information you are looking for or into an unproductive verbal banter match that produces nothing positive to the forum or its members. Next time you are in the garage Sport, you may want to bust out the angle grinder and take the edges off the delivery. Your final post explains well where you were coming from and for that I thank you.

Since you made mention that you have never owned a V-6 Mustang, I will suggest that you be cautious with your future opinions until you have acquired some additional knowledge of these vehicles. I have no idea what your technical background is but engineering principals show that pure engine displacement has very little to do with peek HP and TQ. Only you can decide what is best for you, but be careful when making large generalized comments concerning a V-8 beating most other cars and never owning a V-6 Mustang. We never know what life has in store for us. Let’s assume that a twist of fate landed you as the owner of a Shelby C6 Mustang, I would hope you would not turn it down simply because it is a V-6.

If you want to keep up with or “beat most cars on the road”, you have some serious work to do and cash to outlay. In my area of California AMG MBs and BMW M series are a dime a dozen. A 2006 BMW M-5 is packing a 5.0L V-10 with 500 HP while an AMG MB E55 is packing a 5.4L V-8 with 469 HP. We have little Lexus IS 350s driven by most high school and college kids like they are inexpensive Honda Civics. The little IS350 is wielding a V-6 capable of 306hp and is a light little beast. I have seen too many 05/06 GTs make a fatal mistake with this 6 speed competitor. Heck the new little Saturn Sky Turbo 2.0L is a little pumping a weak little 266hp/260 lb-ft of torque with a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds in a tiny 2800 pound rocket; a worthy advesary to the unfamiliar GT owner with a bad 1st to 2nd misshift with a bad reaction time.

Let us not even get into the Audi R8 and “S” series vehicles that look like family wagons but are packing HP and TQ figures that can shame even the GT500, Roush Stage 3 and Saleen S281s. No, sir, if you are not looking out and are not well aware of your competition in all forms one of these vehicles will land the smack down on your GT and do it with finesse and grace.

Stallionlover, I have owned a 98 V-6/03 GT and the S197 V-6 Coupe with 5 speed AOD. I dumped the V-8 like a lead weight when I saw and drove this V-6. There are many on this board that hold respect for this new platform and 4.0L capability and capacity for modification (forced induction or naturally aspirated).

There are some members here that have taken this 4.0L to a new level - Scrming, Rygenstormlocke & Afixer are our pioneers with this platform V-6. Keep in mind that these gentlemen could have very well dropped the cash on a V-8 to have the same 1/4 mile brackets off the lot as they have achieved with their design and modifications. However, for these fellas, and myself, it is the continual pursuit, design, development and modification of the V-6 to achieve the optimal daily driver/track capable machine that has presented this 4.0L V-6 as a choice vehicle and a builder enthusiast’s dream. It is a quest and a challenge that deserves respect when methodically carried out as these gentlemen have.

Hmm, intesting thought, since over the Mustang's 38 year history, the majority of Mustangs have 6 cyl engines.

I totally agree with you. V6 does only one good thing for a mustang- lowers the cost of GT, due to the economies of scale for common parts: frame, doors, seats, etc.
Other than that V6 mustang is simply put a "girlie" car. Cause most of the chicks don't need performance and they wouldn't give a damn between V6 and say, GT500.
To me V6 looks wimpy with those skinny ass tires, single lame exhaust. And the performance? O please, 210hp would do good for a lightweight car like Miata, but not for 3400lbs car.
I've seen some unlucky folks getting themselves a V6, then when they realize what they got, they try to modify it by spending extra $$. And in the end they pay more than GT and still got a lame V6.

The S197 3-V 4.6L is a beast. Solid HP and TQ curve. Block and internals are well built and will give you the power and torque you are looking for with little to no build-up required. A custom tune to kill the drive by wire hesitation is a must. The lack of throttle response can be a bummer if you are unfamiliar with the feel of the DBW versus throttle cable. Suspension and chassis dynamics need a little fine-tuning and beefing. Adjustable coil overs in the rear and a well-engineered spring package with a 1" - 1.5" drop will settle the ride. The usual gear ratio change and tire swap will give you a nice daily driver with a decent 1/4 mile bracket.

You have a wealth of information and feedback at your disposal from the GT Tech members here. Again, my appreciation for the positive, respectful response. I look forward to future exchanges.

The Mustang, in stock form, is already faster than 90% of the cars on the road you will realistically see everyday.

Now it's that last 10% and the 20-sumtins behind the wheel that make ya cringe for more power.

Wow way to stir the pot. Well Greg check it out, stay with the SVT crowd and don't come around here. No one really want or needs your comments. It is just pure nasty and tasteless.
There are plent of people with that wimpy looking car that are running 12's for and still are under what the GT costs. Drop a S/C or Turbo on it and a tune and you are beating Stock GT's and you still have less than $5K in the car in mods. To each is own and it apperant that you have very little respect for cars let alone fellow mustangs. Your Ignorance shines through in your comments and if you owned an S197 you'd understand. Maybe you are compensating for something little in your life or maybe the knowledge about cars just isn't there for you. SO do some research and know what you saying before you open your yap further!

I paid $19K (vs.$26K for a GT) for my 210 HP car with 17 inch (245Z17's) wheels and 4 wheel disk brakes and factory stock the run a 15.5 1/4 mile faster than any Fox GT. No bad IMO. I've put $600 in mine and am running
14's another $3800 for an S/C and I'm running low 13's!
