Type F, Type FA, Mercon, what fluid?

It has been a loooong time since I had a Mustang with an Automatic transmission. Back when I and my Mustangs were younger, you could go to the store, almost any store, and buy Type F fluid. After shopping high and low, all I have found locally is Type FA. Is that good enough for my 72 Mach with an FMX? Other suggestions?

FA and F are the same. I remember going crazy running to different places until I found that out. Now I have a manual trans so I don't worry about my old C4 fluid type anymore :-)

F and FA are the same. D. is right htough. If it's a rebuild, they can use what ever.
The hydraulic fluid is beeter than tranny fluid in alot of ways. It is designed with more pressure and higher temps than a tranny could hope to see. Alof of turbo cars use them, and especially the guys blowing thru converters. It does tighten a stall up. And it's way cheaper than tranny fluid also.

Man does it stink though! I have Mobil1 5w20 in mine. No smell, no swell. The level does no vary from cold to hot like it does with ATF. Some C4 builders are using the latest Mercon, I believe it is a synthetic.

I actually found Type F buried in the back of the cases of fluid at a parts store in Orange, CA today, so I quickly bought it. They had FA and F, but as they were the same price, I bought the Type F.

I had thought FA was the replacement for F, but doesn't matter for the time being. Thanks for the replies.
