Hey all. When i turn on my car it makes a noise as if u turn the key while the car is on. It does that noise for about 3 seconds then it goes away. I replaced starter and its still happening. It happens every time i start my car. Itll start up, that ugly screeching noise for bout 3...4. seconds then it goes away and everything is fine. I have a 92 GT. Thanks ! !

not too sure bout the ring gear, but the sound happens every single time i turn on my car. :( Damn crap.... i thought it was the starter replaced that bad boy and nada...still same sound. Its a ugly screech for a few seconds then it goes away. Any ideas?

Is it like a high pitched squeel? might be the serpentine belt, mine used to do that on my old cavalier. Just had to tighten the belt and it went away

I had that same problem..check you starter and make sure the bolts are not loose. Mine were slightly loose after I did a clutch job..and it fixed the prob..good luck! :nice:

consider the starter solenoid. From time to time, I'll start mine and the solenoid will stick an will make this high-pitched, grinding, chattering noise, and I have to pop the hood, grab my piers, open the hood and smack the solenoid and it will unstick.
No good.
Have someone start the car and you stay there and whack it (with a tool), and see if it stops right away.

Don't mean to steal the thread but...when I start my car there's a really loud grinding noise. It goes away as soon as the car starts. Sounds like the engine is trying to start without oil (obviously it is but I can't describe it any other way). Maybe it's the starter making the noise but it sure does sound like the engine. Anyone else experienced this?

That's probably your starter hitting you ring gear at a bad angle (loose starter/improper alignment/bad starter teeth) or missing some teeth on the ring gear. To check, make sure starter was tight to bellhousing, then pull out the starter, check the teeth on the starter, look at the teeth on the ring gear through the starter hole (have to spin the motor with a socket on the crank to see all of the ring gear) and if still no signs of the problem then I would bench test the starter. Good luck :nice:
