uh... driveshaft loop? am i dumb?

Cus I've never heard of it until yesterday. I got my car back from getting subframe connectors installed, and one of the mechanics asked if I had been to the track lately. He told me that it's dangerous to be running out there without a driveshaft loop. Wha? He told about a Cobra that was running and broke his driveshaft and it tore the mess out of the car cus it flipped it. Somebody fill me in on what they are and what they do. Thanks

its a loop that goes around the drive shaft, so just incase it breaks it will catch the driveshaft and keep it from bouncing around and tearing up your car...

It's a loop of metal attached to the underside of your floor
It loops around the driveshaft
If the driveshaft breaks it keeps it from poking up through your floor

ok, I figured it was something like that. I just wasn't sure. How important is it? Does it make changing out driveshafts a PITA? Like if I were to go with an aluminum d/s later?

It looks like THIS & THIS.

I believe it's supposed to be 4-8 inches from the back of the front universal joint. You might want to check the NHRA/IHRA safety rules for exact placement. I can't really measure mine at the moment because the driveshaft and rearend are both out of the car. Sorry.

Hey that's great, thanks for the pics! I don't really need to know exactly where they go, I'd probably have my mechanic put it on. Thanks again.

they are only like 40$$$ and you HAVE to have one if you run on the track 15 secs(maybe lower) or faster NHRA/IHRA rules. if you arnt gonna run it i wouldnt worry about it......of course i am gonna use one...

Actually, I've already ran my car, 16 times! But only in test & tune. The track here is pretty lenient during T&T.

I've got a Metco one piece loop on my car that I bought from Year One and it clears my aluminum driveshaft just fine and removal of the driveshaft doesn't get any harder with the loop.
